So I just recieved an 03 jeep Liberty sport model and love the look and how it drives but, I've been experiencing a hard shift occasionally and when I took it into to read the codes when they did it threw P0740, P0734 and, P1776. I am looking for a good place to start repairing I've already swapped fluid but, it hasn't gone away and I am worried that it will cost more to repair then I actually paid for the vehicle.

Codes

'03 Liberty's used 45RFE transmissions up to Feb 26, 2003 IIRC and used 42RFE trans after that date, so look at your vehicle build date to see which trans you have. Then look at your trans to see which one you have as this will affect the repairs needed.

P0740 - torque converter circuit problem.
P0734 - incorrect 4th gear ratio
P1776 - solenoid problem

The P0740 & P0734 might be caused by the input shaft sensor gone bad as this is a common problem.

The P1776 solenoid problem might be solved by fluid & filter change but this is a long shot.

If you have a good trans shop with Jeep experience near you get a diagnosis from them. They can give you input as to what is wrong. However, most places I take a vehicle say just replace the trans. That is why I say "If you have a good trans shop..."

If it were my trans, I would change the input shaft sensor (about $20) and fluid and filter using ATF4 from Walmart. Total cost about $60. You might be fortunate and have this fix your problem. A gamble though.

I bought a '03 with a 42RFE that would not move the Liberty. Dropped the pan and found the filter clogged with clutch material. Kept getting P0740 code. The torque converter clutch material had failed and clogged the filter. This is a common problem with TCC & Jeep had a recall on them. After replacing the fluid and filter, the trans shifted fine but kept setting the P0740 code. Trans would also overheat at freeway speeds with bad TCC. Ended up replacing the 173k miles trans with a 83k one from a wreck with new torque converter. Runs fine. However, I believe the 173k mile trans would have been ok if I had just replaced the torque converter. My Liberty is a 4x4 so it took me 2 days to change the trans working on concrete with jack stands. Not an easy job on a 4x4 without a lift and proper equipment. That is why I replaced the entire trans rather than just the torque converter. Hope this info helps. ****** problems are scary.

Unfortunately the solenoid issue is a common issue in the 42RLE. Only way to fix it is to drop the trans and open it up. While in there, you might as well rebuild since you're paying the labor to open it up anyway.
