Corrosion.....need to be sanded and varnished (clear coat) again. Approx. 300$ for a good job.

That's usually just the clear coat peeling off...Get some heavy duty paint stripper, spray it on using proper safety gear (thick rubbers gloves, mask, etc..), make sure you don't get it on anything you don't want to be stripped!!! That will dissolve and remove all the clear coat after a little scraping. You can then go ahead and repaint to your liking. Always worked for me.

If you want it done right, you'll get it sand/media blasted then re-cleared. No real 'cheap' solution to it other than that or buying new wheels. Getting them blasted and redone is in the ball park of a $300-$400 job.

Oh yea, you need some new lug nuts!
I would use a heavy duty stripper. Then paint them this obviously isn't a lifetime cure but its like $20 and some of your time. If you were going to spend $300 midas well get new rims and use these for winter.

I've got a guy that will powder coat a set of wheels for $75 a piece.. Less than $400 for a durable long lasting finish.

I think I have my answer: Ignore it. I'm not spending 300 bucks or more on this. If I were going to do that, I'd get new wheels.
Final question: Could you plasti-dip right over it? Or would it show through you think?

2002 KJ 180K Miles, original everything and running strong (may have had a radiator replaced back in the day, and some breaks etc. but she's still going at 181K!)

Excellent plan! Do invest in 20 new, matching, properly sized lug nuts though. Aftermarket one piece, not the O.E. POS with the stainless steel covers.

Sanding and painting works too if you want.
Your the guy telling him to get it media blasted and thats the only real way to do it for $300-$400. At $75 a set or each. $75 for all four is a crazy deal. For each that leaves you still spending a fair amount of money. I can get steelies for less than that.

I don't think the people that use plastidip on their Jeeps think that far ahead though lol
I dont like plasti dip at all. Anyone can spot that stuff on the rims. Because most people that use it cant park or drive for that matter.

Still cheaper than paint and even more durable. $75 a piece is it. $300 to get em blasted and coated and you think that's too high? Spend the money on the equipment to blast and coat then buy the ovens and tell me that's too high... Not to mention it's also better for the environment. Don't forget the labor either, guys gotta eat!
Edit - blasting and re-coating whichever way you please is the 'correct' way. According to body guys anyway. That's also assuming he only does 4 wheels, at 5 wheels he'd still be under $400.
Or just get some stripper $10 a quart and some spray paint and do it yourself i never said its more durable than powder coat obviously. I even made sure to say this is not a lifetime cure. This will still last a year or two if done right. Then you spend another $20 and do it again i could do this for 20 years and not be at $400. And to any normal person they wouldnt know the difference. If done right.
And yes i do think $300 is too high for rims that work just fine. Thats $300 for pure look. Just because the clear coat is peeling go and spend $300. That is cheap for the job your talking about. Must have some good connects.
$300 could get a set of rims and tires on a site like craigslist or ebay. $400 and you could easily find steelie rims brand new.

Yea then pay for mounting/balancing and installation for those internet wheels.. No need to go and get butt hurt over a suggestion. icon996.gif Let me add as well, did I ever say it's a necessary thing? Do you want a permanent solution to your problem? Something relatively low maintenance? Ok, then powder coat is an option! And I do have some connections in the world of body work, thanks! Good friends of mine own a shop called Woods Collision, they build one off long travel sand rails and this guy (C&L Hot Rod Coatings to be exact) hooks us up on our powder coating needs. :gr_grin: No offense was meant to be given, so take it how ya want it!
