Interesting................it also says in there that FCA will make payments to 1.56m owners of older jeeps involved in the gas tank recall...(KJ's or XJ's or what????)......hmmmmmmmmm

The buy back should be cash paid for the fair market value of vehicles recalled, not a coupon off for a "discount" on a new vehicle purchase. Remember the GM side saddle gas tank on pickup trucks? GM gave a $ value coupon good on the future purchase of a new truck. Wonder how many coupons were actually used. Lots of people can't afford new vehicles so a coupon off becomes worthless to them. At new Jeep prices, I sure won't be buying one.

No. The buyback pertains to those models that can't for whatever reason be fixed. Our Liberty has a "fix".
And for the buyback, they're paying what was paid for new, minus depreciation. Uhhh, isn't fair market value an easier way of saying the same thing.
Plus, Chrysler can sell the trucks again once they make the fixes.

I could care less, with regards to the Grand Cherokee and Liberty they passed Federal regulations at time. What's next? Buy back on all cars before 1990 still on the road because they don't have air-bags or abs? Or are they going to try and retrofit first?

Yeah, I remember that. It turned out that 20/20 rigged the trucks to explode in their "testing."
As for the KJ fix, wouldn't a fuel tank skid plate protect better that a cheapo hitch?
If they want to buy back my girl they will have to pay big bucks and if they want to pay for a skid then great i will price out a gas tank skid and bring the quote with but past that i am fine with her how she is

I wonder if any of the people involved in that Chevy truck report are politicians now, they sure had the makings for one.
Oops, they misreported and it was a "bad idea". Gee ya think? Once damage is done by bad press, it's almost impossible to undo.
The same thing was done with the Suzuki Samurai, stating how it was prone to roll overs, even though it didn't roll in the tests. They lied.
Hell, I had a couple, one stock and one lifted 5" with 31's. They weren't "unstable", but I wouldn't road race them either.
Anybody with an agenda, can find a way (lie) to make their case stick.

I did some questionable driving stunts with my Explorer when I had it. Never once did it remotely tip, nor did it ever feel like it was tipping when I turned corners. Much like the debacle of the tire recall incident that preceded it when I had bought it.
the Exploder tire "issue" was a combination of factors, most notably people's inability to maintain their ******* rigs (tire pressures. who knew it was a critical thing!?!?)
As for my Jeep... I still haven't gone in for the free hitch... mostly because I already have a beast of one installed and frankly don't feel like wasting my time at the moment to sit at the dealer for 2 hours minimum (they all suck around here) to have them tell me i'm GTG.
Now as others have said, if they want to give me a gas tank skid or pay for one I'm down with that as well. But I'll never trade or sell mine back. It too me too damn long to find it.

I am waiting to find that the hitch is found not to fix the exposed gas tank issue.
Fiat is supposed to recall 500,000 pickups, that's just 150,000 less than the entire Cash for Clunkers program - only this time it will be 100% Dodge pickups.

And partly why this has become a $107,000,000.00 issue.
I don't know about you but I had over 20 emails and over 30 recall letter from Chrysler to get that hitch and my KJ is not eligible for any type of warranty/recall work unless I pay out of pocket.I have the letter from Chrysler stating that but they still sent over 50 notices.
Just as there was when the "Firestone 500" bankrupted the company in the early 80's. The reason they're owned by Bridgestone now. Bridgestone had deeper pockets/better PR people for the Explorer FUBAR.
Be interesting to hear your take on the Explorer issue and the need to keep it to yourself?
