Coming home from a 250 mile trip our A/C went out. I shut off the A/C and we drove windows down. You could hear the pulley grinding as we drove.
Took it to shop today and they said metal shavings got into the entire system and it will be 1700.00 +/- to repair. New dryer, compressor some tube got a hole in it and the system will need to be flushed and then recharged of course.
Sound up to par or ridiculous quote?

Thanks

Mmmmm...get a second opinion...make sure the system didn't freeze...It happened to me last week on the road...really, really humid with rain showers hitting us all day...stupid me drove all day with the A/C wide open...shut off very quickly and only blew HOT air no matter what the vent position....checked the system charge and it was just fine...discussed it with Dr. Mudd and decided to let her sit overnight...next day everything worked perfectly and continues to do so...don't let them sell you stuff without talking to another shop....

If the compressor blew internally $1700 is cheap as the whole AC system must be replaced(actual properly trained automotive AC techs can confirm this). This means the condenser and evaporator must be changed also. Most automakers and aftermarket AC suppliers require most parts(if not all parts) to be replaced to keep any type of warranty.

There is a old slang term that the older techs may still know about AC systems called "1991 condenser"(if I remember the date correctly) which is basically the year that they started making bypass condensers that are nearly impossible to flush(thus making a new compressor fail faster) but increase the system efficiency.

If the compressor clutch just went with no internal compressor failure the typical KJ AC repair is $1000.

If the compressor had a catastrophic failure, the compressor, orifice tube, condenser and accumulator need to be replaced. The evaporator and lines will also need to be flushed. Then it will need to be evacuated and recharged.

The quote does sound a bit high. If the bearing just went out, then none of this will need to be done. I would definitely get a second opinion on the diagnosis and the cost to repair.

Compressor failed losing its fluid and then blowing metal shavings into other parts of the system.

I had my compressor and condenser replaced a year ago. Cost about $800 from my Mechanic.
