Good video! Informative and humorous. Will be doing this shortly on the new KJ.

or anytime you've been off road and think you may have gotten any water etc in.

When you change the fluid in the rear diff I've read on other forums you need to jack up the rear to get the correct level, does anyone know if that is needed? And same with the front to jack up the front to get the right level when changing the front diff fluid. I know it's supposed to be a half inch below the fill hole for the front and rear just wasn't sure if the jacking up part was needed in order to get the correct level. I have a lift so I can get to the areas easily without a jack.
Thanks!

I think all you need is to have your jeep on a leveled surface.

That's what I thought but few other jeep forums I saw talking about it said you had to jack it up to get the right level. Just wanted to make sure I'm going to do mine this week. The dealer here wanted 150-175 per diff 0_o

I fill until it stops coming out of the fill hole; I found it impossible to gauge it to the half inch below the the filler.

front and rear axle fluid should be changed every 12,000 miles according to the owners manual.

I have no doubt as to the veracity of your post, but this seems like a patch job remedy to an issue that should have been better engineered.

A customer, electrical contractor, bought (6) new Dodge R2500 pickups a few years back, just a few miles past warranty, two of them hulled the differential. Dodge said because diff fluid should have been changed every 12K (or so) and wouldn't give any financial assistance. Needless to say, they have a fleet of FOMOCO now.

Simply stop adding and stick your finger in occasionally. Overfill is the surest way to make perfectly good seals leak. (other than d@mned mud dauber wasp filling the vent tube with dirt)
