mmmm if memory serves me right, the cheap bluetooth ones w/ torque app does not read the TCM
they are all cheap really for bt.... i know the app apparently supports it but i dont know for sure. i can get an elm 327 for like 17 bucks and from what i have read they do read it but others say no... i just want some sort of confirmation... or a cheap real scanner.

Maybe you can w/ the elm327 but looking through torque app which I use with mine doesn't have any transmission data to display.

The CRD and JK forums both have the custom PIDs you need for the transmission but i cant find for the 3.7KJ, theres an initial PID you have to use to wake the transmission sensors and a second PID which pulls the data

I've got a PLX Kiwi that I like, but I'm not sure if it reads the TCM. It obviously pulls some data from it, as I can see what gear I'm in, though. I'll see what I can find out after work when I have some time to play with it.

I had that same thing well on my Mazda and loved it. It was nice being able to get the data from right on my phone.
i know i just want to be re-assured whichever one i have does what i want ... and there is conflicting reports of if certain ones work or not...
i'know ima end up buying a used snap on solaris for lie 800 bucks but you know... rather spend 100

Well, I just tried it with DashCommander. I didn't see anything related to transmission temperature.
I then downloaded Torque and setup the Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge PIDs, which caused Transmission Temp to show up on the list, but it still didn't read it.
After looking into it closer, it looks like Transmission Temperature is not a standard PID and is manufacturer (and possibly even model) specific, so you'd have to find the PID for the transmission data point your looking for.
I don't see why the Kiwi PLX wouldn't read the PID, if you knew it. However, you'd also have to know the math correction value to make the raw input make sense.
Seems like it'd just be easier to add a transmission temperature gauge, sadly. Would have loved to get this working.

I have the Garmin Mechanic and the transmission temperature is the thing I miss the most. 
kind of off base from what i want ... but i understand ,..... i just wnt to be able to read the tcm trouble codes.... but i guess if it wont read the temp it wont read the codes either.

Oh. Hm. Well, see, that's an unknown. I don't have a transmission code to read! I know it'll read engine codes. :shrug:
From my understanding, though, in order to get the real code from the transmission you'll need a transmission reader that plugs directly into the TCM, not through the OBDII port. The OBDII port is just going to give you the blanket 'Hey, something is wrong with the transmission!' error.
but the tcm is in the pcm .. which you talk to via obdII
and also extract 50-199 bucks from my wallet but ya i know.... im on a hump about it

ScanGaugeII will read codes and do a lot more. got mine for $150 a year ago.
