It gets "U" bolted to the existing roof bars.

I've seen others, on here, mounted that way, so figured that'd be good for me.

I went the U-Bolt route (after not liking the custom mounts which came with my roof rack and ditching them), and like them a lot. I had to fab up my own crossbars, too, which turned out great in my opinion. For one thing, I haven't had to re-tighten anything since the day I put them on. I've been meaning to grab some pictures of them but since I only did it last July I figure there is no rush. :icon_lol:

Only issue with that is most end up being 6-8 inches it seems off the roof. Of course I like mine right down close to the roof line, catches less wind and looks like it suppose to be there
When I ran the stock bars the bottom of my rack was at the same level as the bottom of the rails

Going to try and get nylocs on them, or loctite, just to remove any concerns over it coming loose.

With the amount of gear that we're taking on this trip, I don't think having it slimline is going to make much difference to the amount of wind it catches.

Depends on whether the U-Bolts are attaching it vertically or horizontally. My rack came with some custom mounts which raised it vertically, making the whole works higher than I would have liked. The old system looked like a Jenga contraption with crossbars above the side rails and the rack on top of that. My new custom crossbars are mounted horizontally between the side bars, lowering the rack itself to a position more between and almost below the side rails rather than above them. From a slight distance it almost appears that the entire works (side rails, crossbars, and rack) are a single unit.

NOTE: The picture in my sig is from a year ago and shows the old system. Imagine the basket being over 2" lower the new way and you get the idea. There was barely enough room to get the 3/8" diameter U-Bolts under the crossbars to attach them. :)

No, haven't done my boasting yet. :icon_lol: I probably referenced it in my build thread (see sig) but was waiting to get some Plasti Dip over the bolts before taking pictures. Then I took my dad on a 1,400 mile trip, then moved, then moved again, then it was cold, or raining, or I was tired, or just forgot, or...

That's why I put stuff on my calendar, eventually - it tends to get done that way.

So tomorrow I will get pictures (no new Plasti Dip yet), unless it rains or...

(EDIT) Tomorrow's forecast: Weather in Sterling - AccuWeather Forecast for VA 20164 See how it goes? :happy175:

Yours looks good,
some though are so high they divert air traffic under them when they are driving close to an airport

Well, a couple of hours in the shop tonight finished the roof rack.

I'm off to do some project management, and working long days for the next 3 weeks. Hopefully I can arrange the powder coat guy to come and collect.

Anyone tried some of these colourised galvanising options?

Added a CB aerial mount, and a couple of flag holders for the charity stuff we are supporting.

Here you go: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f222/profdlps-2007-liberty-project-54355/index6.html#post648035

You really ought to read my whole build thread. It's one of the best around and I haven't even gotten to the GOOD stuff yet. :33:

Scottch, I cannot wait to see the rest of what you have up your sleeve. My dream is to participate in an event like this someday. I'll be rooting for you all the way. :waytogo:

Prof,

Those are really neat clamps for keep your cross bars on the centre line of the OEM roof bars.

My cross bars sit on top of the OEM roof bars, but it's only 1" box section. It's not going to have jets flying underneath, but just a little higher than yours.

I won't be doing much more to the jeep now until after the event.

Front propshaft is going in today, and another look at the oil leak.

Other than that, it's just a case of fixing the cruise, and recharging the aircon (I hope).

Thanks for your positivity - I'll need it!

Exciting for sure! You'll be just fine! The views and camaraderie that you will come across will be out of this world! Don't forget that there are plenty of others in the same boat as you running R2R, and as in the vid everyone will help out and someone in the group will have an idea on how to fix just about anything!

Thanks, mate, I'm certainly looking forward to it.

Can't help but feel a little cautious, for sure, but I'm sure by the end of June I'll have worked through all the niggles.

Since I'm away with work just now, I'd gotten a friend to have a go at fitting that new front propshaft I got.

Turns out the new one looks like it's about 2" shorter than the original - I'm away so can't check myself - would any of you kind souls know the right length so I can chin our parts shop.

Also, the roof rack came back from powder coat - look forward to installing it this weekend!
