Hey all,
took the rig out on a bit of a trek this arvo, when i pulled over the drivers side (uk), rear wheel was red hot and billowing smoke, (i thought i could smell burning driving up the motorway) couldn't really see where it was coming from plus i didn't really wanna get my face to close to the wheel mainly cos the lug nuts were toasty warm to say the least. let them cool down for a few hours, drove same route home, but no temperature or smoke from that wheel on the reverse journey.

Any ideas>?

Id have thought stuck caliper but it shoulda stayed on, on the reverse journey home surely??

Id think caliper too but maybe a broken park brake pad wedged on the drum of the rotor?

If you have the drum e-brake inside the rotor's hub then a shoe might have stuck and jammed going forward. Letting it cool was a good thing. It might have rattled back out or going in reversed might dislodge. It WILL happen again. Pull the hub off and sort it out.

I just went through this... caliper was sticking. I had a red glow from behind the pass. wheel at night. I figured it out when I went to change the scorched pads.

Unmount the caliper and try to push the piston in manually with a big channel locks or a c-clamp. If it seems really tough (i.e. much tougher than the other side) there's your problem.

When I first had issues with the hot rear brake, I did the parking brakes, but the problem continued and got worse.
