I sort of like the Firestone Destination ATs I have on my 4 liter 98 Ranger. Probably not the best for even moderate off roading but ride nice and pretty quiet. I get about 19-20 mpgs 60/40 city/highway. Of course that may change since I'm heading out to the garage right now to convert the POS PVH hubs. I'm about to lock the front hubs for good until I can get some manual hubs. They were never reliable and I want 4WD when I need it.

BTW ordered my Dest ATs from Tirerack

Destinations are a good around town tire

Ok. I can fit a 30" tire in with stock lift I think, being I have an 02. I really like the Firestone AT. Looks like what I'm looking for.

245/70/16 is probably the max you could do with minimal rubbing. Also if you are trying to maximize fuel economy sticking to stock sizes will help a ton.

Ok. Yeah, then I wouldn't have to find someone to reprogram the PCM. Looks like I'm steering either toward the Toyo or Firestorm AT. Stock is 235. Would a 245 fit?

Stick with stock size or one size larger. With a 12 year old vehicle with sagging springs a 30 inch tall tire is going to be very close or even rubbing a lot.

Yes I definitely agree. They do okay in the snow around here and some muddy dirt roads but definitely not for any decent off roading. I haven't had a set of BFG in forever. I'm gonna have to give them a try again. Really don't know why, just never go with them. I did have a set on a car way back that wore like crap but that car had some other issues.

I have some pretty well worn Michelin ATs 245/70/16 on my sagging 02KJ. No rubs with no lift. Might rub if I had more tread. Hmmm Those BFGs are sounding mighty good. :emotions34:

Here in the mountains, you can be turned away if the tires do not have a snowflake rating.

I run GY Wrangler silent Armor (Kevlar Tread) and they perform well in overall conditions.
That said most AT tires will when new. As mine now approach 50 % I wonder how they will do this winter... Deep new treads count for something in snow & mud.
Many here like the DuraTrac.
One thing I always look at is how strong are the sidewalls? If they feel flimsy they probably are and may puncture easily on sharp rocks.
The GY MTR are kevlar tread & sidewalls are big $$ but are the best in sidewall construction etc. If you are just doing gravel roads, most AT tires should do ok.

Very interesting stuff, TC. Next time I'm in a place that sells tires I'm going to look and see what they're doing down here in "South Canada". :icon_lol:

Ya ya ...:"South Canada" :icon_lol:
I think half of that snowflake "stuff" was mandated to ensure in winter that driver's were expected to have winter tires, not all slip radials and cause crashes or get stuck and F up all the traffic!
Just remember tires & cars do get tested in the Great White north Eh?

Many Winter driver's though.... should just stay at home!

I have the BFG Rugged Terrain, and they're an awesome tire on dry, wet and snow. Now the All Terrain's, I've had them before and wouldn't touch em with a ten foot pole for a street driven Jeep.
As far as 245/70/16's fitment, those are 29.5" tall and stock tires are 29". Your Jeep has serious issues if you don't have well over an extra 1/4" of clearance now.

I just looked them up. They look pretty awesome. Price is really good on Tire Rack (to me at least).

Thanks for the input. Looking like I'm gonna ride on these till I get a steady job and then go all out and lift it a little. Gotta have some $$$ for rent.
