Crd turbo I take elbow and code p0299

Hey guys, so the wife's crd is is throwing the p0299 code for low boost. I was inspecting my intercooler tubes, and I was popping the turbo intake elbow off and noticed it was completely rotted right at the clamp and tore right off. A common problem from what have read. I used a cheapo oreillys intake coupler to clamp it back on for now until the new one gets here. My question is, could this be causing my cel and code? Or should I be investigating into the vacuum lines more to find a leak, or checking the egr valves etc.. I suppose I'll find out on my own if the codes I cleared come back ha ha, thought I'd get a jump on what to expect if someone else had some experience. Thanks guys.

I meant turbo intake on my title.. Fat fingers and auto correct got me. If a mod could fix it that would be awesome, if not no big deal, I think you all know what I mean ha ha.

I am not even sure where I should start with this problem... essentially it is death by a thousand cuts. There are numerous conditions, but mostly a very bad pollution control system and an engine thermostat that allows the engine to run too cold that causes these problems. You have a choked out intake system that has to be cleaned out... condensed pollutants found in diesel exhaust and crankcase ventings create a sludge that coats the entire intake system from where they are fed in. They gunk up the turbo and the vacuum actuated variable venturi that controls the turbo. When the vacuum actuator gets clogged with pollutants, it can no longer move the variable venturi and then the venturi gets stuck wide open. When the venturi gets stuck wide open, the turbo does not spool up until about 2000 rpm, and therefore you lose all of your lower rpm power.

The thermostat makes everything worse because it makes the engine run too cool, and does not allow the engine a lot of heat to help burn off some of the exhaust gases and crankcase ventings that are re-circulated in the engine. I suggest the following, (assuming you are off-warranty)...

1) Contact Kieth at Green Diesel Engineering, (Green Diesel Engineering - Jeep Performance ECU Chip Tuner). He has re-tuning programs for the engine and transmission computers that get rid of the pollution control system and make your Liberty CRD run like it was supposed to. He even has a superior replacement turbo that can really deliver power if you want it.

2) Contact Sasquatch Motorsports, (Sasquatch Motorsports - Jeep Liberty 2.8L CRD Products) They have replacement intake components that get rid of components on your engine that you do not need, and simplify your intake system.

3) Get a set of Samco hoses for your intake system.

4) Get an elephant hose modification done to your crankcase ventilation system.

5) Buy my new design engine thermostat. The O.E.M. engine thermostats for Liberty CRD vehicles, until now, were the only ones available, and the valve inside the unit opens up at 176 degrees. This is way too cool for North American climates. My new design is quick and easy to service, and makes the engine run almost 30 degrees hotter. You save fuel in the winter with my design, have more power, and will get better reliability with it.

I pulled all intercooler hoses, pulled the egr and verified it's still functioning and I've been tracing all the vacuum lines. My intercooler hoses are fine, egr is good... Well it's functioning, whether it's "good" is a different story. I've looked into gde tuning and will address it at a later time. This is my wife's vehicle and she has no interest in modding unless parts are actually failing. I'll probably talk her into gde tuning if/when the egr fails and at that point I'll be deleting it. The intercooler lines and turbo intake elbow were coated in oil but not in an excessive amount. The elephant hose mod is on my to do list.

As of now I've found a broken 3mm vac hose off of the turbo solenoid. I patched it and the turbo is spooling fine for now, but I have purchased a replacement that will hopefully remedy my cel. Thanks for your response but I'm not at a point where Im ready to drop $1000 on modding/deleting/rebuilding this jeeps emission system.

I understand completely. With my thermostat project, I have been unable to afford modifications myself. Good luck with the CRD! :happy107:

Thanks for the insight though! I typically mod as I'm replacing parts so I may look into the thermostat more later on. My main goal is to get this cel cleared so it doesn't go in to limp while the wife is hauling the kids around. We might be getting her something bigger in the future and I'm going to take the crd for a dd and park my superduty a little more. When that happens I'll be getting my mod on ha ha.
