I have an 06, 3.7l auto with a strange steering wheel vibration...

The steering wheel has a shake/vibration at all speeds but is more pronounced at higher speeds. Strange thing is that it is not totally speed dependant. If I set the cruise control on the highway the vibration seems to cycle off and on at approx 15 second intervals. Everything will be smooth for a while then the vibration will start and increase in severity and then disapear again.

I have tried rotating the tires to the rear with no success. Alignment seems alright. Vehicle tracks nice and straight. I assume that if the vibration was caused by an out of balance rotating mass it would be present at all times.

Any suggestions any one may have is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Check the boot on the drive shaft. Mine came off a few years back and did the same thing, I thought it was an alignment or tire balance issue but it wasn't. I only found out what it was after my ****** went and they were crawling around underneath it and saw it was missing. If it did come off, get it checked ASAP because dirt and grime can get up in there and it'll ruin the drive shaft and it's not cheap to replace!

If it's in the steering wheel and not the whole vehicle it's doubtable, but could be a U-Joint too! I would check in this order:

-CV joint on front driveshaft
-Wheels balanced? All weights in place?
-Check U-Joints on rear driveshaft for play. Pull driveshaft and make sure u joints have full range of motion.

Thanks for the replies. You can only feel the vibration in the steering wheel. Ill give everything a good wash and inspection this weekend. If I find anything Ill be sure to post it.
