My front recievers worked awesome. I didnt have to walk home. Unfortunately my Jeep didnt. Im looking for possible repair schemes as well as upgrades to insure thus doesnt happen again. Unfortunately as you can probably tell it was an angled pull..

It was actually a pretty gentle slow pull. Came out very easy. Not sure why the cross member failed the way it did so easily.

The metal is not that think right in that area, reason why its a bad idea to mount them that way.
You needed a good sized metal piece inside the frame rail as well to even the load out over a larger area.
Plus looks like you had a side pull going on so putting more stress on it. Not much to do now except plate the whole area and install a good system

Your jeep didn't fail. You and your terrible idea did. Factory tow hooks are for straight pulls only. Did you really think that a lateral pull using the same 3 bolts would work?

You needed to tie the two sides together and you would have been fine. As I have said before.

Tom gave some good advice. As for those who like to show up and point fingers, I hope the next time you screw up the people you turn to for advice are a little more considerate.

I know what you're saying but don't generalize just cuz of the post in this thread. I've found this site to be very helpful and 99% of the folks here are patient and willing to give constructive advice. There are those who don't understand forum etiquette and how they come across. Blow by those and look for input from those who are experienced AND socially intelligent :whip:

To the OP... One of my OEM front hooks is bent a bit from a mild front end collision the previous owner got into. Cosmetically it's not an issue but I don't use that hook for getting pulled or pulling others - I use the other side.

That said, I'm either going to install a good front bumper with recovery points or a KJ Backbone System from Detours USA. Good quality stuff and a reasonable price. (If you look closely at the blue KK in the pics on that page you'll see a certain "Kilimanjaro Edition" KJ in the background. The Backbone was installed at his garage and I know the guy who owns the blue KK. Like I said above, it's a good, strong system and others here can vouch for it.)

Hopefully this post has revived faith in the Jeep KJ Country community :waytogo:

It failed for several reasons, one being its thinner material, two being the way it was mounted, three the force of the pull . You take a 4000 lb plus vehicle stuck in mud etc , it takes a lot of energy to pull it out.
For any type of pull like that you need good strong mounts. Having just bolts through the frame doesn't work, you need a good size chuck of metal inside the frame rail and then bolt through the frame to that to spread the load as much as possible. Also always try to pull as straight as possible.
Not pointing fingers just things learned the hard way over the last 45 years of doing this crap.
The Detours is a great mount as well as just the center section of the Matrix Brush Guard both have good solid mounts and a place to pull from, plus both are braced side to side

Sorry, that looks bad.
I have no experience with mounting tow packages.
I could be wrong but it doesn't look like it was mounted on to the frame.
Not trying to flame here. Just curious.

Yes, this site has a lot of knowledge but its so harsh on new people its just ridiculous. I've been on a lot of forums over the last 10+ years, so know what a good forum can be like. But here, if you come in here and post anything that's not OME, Ironman, JBA, or whatever the highest posters have on their kj's and you get ridiculed and treated like a moron. I understand how it can be frustrating answering the same questions over and over but if that's a problem maybe you shouldn't be answering....you don't look cool, you look like a typical internet tough guy.....that's why I only come here for technical help (which so far hasn't been all that accurate anyway, lol). Whatever....hopping off that soapbox....

In defense of the OME/JBA/Frankenlift/Ironman/Billstein etc etc talk the only reason people mention those is because those are really the only things that work for our specific Jeeps. I don't think anyone is pushing these products just because they have them and are fanboys of those brands but because they want everyone on here to have the best ride possible without costing then more money in the long run for going with proven bad products.

I know it's easy to think people are just being a fanboy of certain parts dealers or parts brands. But really don't take it that way. 80% if the time peoples tones are just misinterpreted because there is no emotion over a computer so it's easy to take someone as being a dick when they try to say one product ***** and another doesn't.

Stop by Pirate 4x4 forum, this forum is super G rated.

For the OP what already has been said is all true. And sad to say using receiver hitches like that is really a bad idea, don't care how cool it looks.Wrong tool for the job(yes the truth hurts sometimes). With that much damage both front recovery points are severely compromised and having that section replaced will make it look appealing but still nowhere near the strength as it came from the factory.Okay for crash protection but worthless for recovery.

I hear you all on Pirate 4x4, but c'mon, something worse is not an excuse for something bad.

There was absolutely no reason, besides a self serving one, for the OP to be responded to like that.
