Recently got a check engine light, after hooking up the scanner to me jeep found out it was a bad 02 sensor. Bank 1 sensor 1. No big deal I figured id replace it as I have done so on other vehicles previously. Along with a variety of other tools I have the correct 02 sensor specific socket. I am having a hard time getting the sensor out however. Im not new to do it yourself type work so I feel guilty even asking for help. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get that thing out. Ive already tried wd40 & pb blast and even went as far as heating it up with a small torch. I let the vehicle run to heat up the exhaust as well. For the life of me I can not get the o2 sensor out. I either cant get enough leverage or when I do it just slips off or starts to strip the o2 sensor. Ive already broke the internals of one ratchet trying to get it off. Any suggestions?

Buy better tools. Snapon 02 socket. The one with the offset head. 3/8 breaker bar.

I appreciate the answer and do agree, the proper tools do make the job a lot easier. I do have snap on ratchets, as well as a variety of breaker bars. however clearance seems to be an issue. Its a tight spot, and I can not fit any larger ratchets, nor a breaker bar where it needs to be. :/

Are you sure it's the O2 sensor?

What code did you get? If it is a P0171 check first for vacuum leaks especially with the hoses that come off the throttle body. I replaced one that is a 1/2" hose that connects to the back of the engine - it was split right at the end and wouldn't stay on the engine fitting. Bought an 8" section and replaced it - check engine light went out immediately.

If it is the P0171 it is saying you have a lean condition meaning too much air in the fuel/air mixture which is usually a vacuum leak and not a sensor. Go the cheap and easy route first before trying to get to that :favorites68: sensor... :boxed:. Save yourself frustration and money.

When I did mine, I used a breaker bar and O2 socket and got to it from underneath. There wasn't much room, but it's doable.

Thanks for the replies I will give the breaker bar another try. The code I am getting is ("P0133 02 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 1 Sensor 1") With that being said do you guys think it is indeed the 02 sensor that is bad & needs replaced, or so you think I should look elsewhere as to what might possibly be causing the jeep to throw the code? I apreciate the help.

Yes it's the O2 sensor that needs to be replaced. Do yourself a favor and don't go cheap. Make sure you replace it with NTK only.

It's a pain on the neck getting drivers side out I had to pull the connector from where it's mounted to have more room to be able to unplug 02 sensor. And to remove it I had to get a couple extensions an a universal joint.i beleive its call from the front of the engine to the 02 sensor.. it's hard to get ur hands in there almost no room

Yep, offset oxygen sensor socket and ⅜" breaker bar. Spray with PB, heat up the bung - not the socket - with the propane or MAPP gas torch and lean into the bar.

I got my hand up to unclip the electrical connector, but it wasn't easy. And it left marks.
