I just bought an 05 Liberty from a dealership on Monday. I made sure the a/c worked because it has been so hot here in Denver but it never dawned on me to check the heat. I turned the defroster on this morning and it was blowing cold, not just air that isn't hot but A/C cold air. I tried it again a few minutes later and it blew heat for about 3 seconds and turned a/c cold again. The dealership isn't going to touch it because it has no warranty. Any ideas what the problem could be? Snow season will be here soon and I have to have heat. Thanks

welcome...congrats on the jeep. First I would say to double check the dealer laws in your area. In CT the dealer is required by law to provide a minimum 30 day warranty, even if they say the vehicle is sold "as-is".

As far as what the problem could be...you're basically saying that the A/C won't turn off, correct? When it should be blowing just outside air or heat you're not only getting no heat, but getting A/C. My first thought is that it's an electrical issue or something with the a/c controls. If it were just "no heat" I would say heater core needs to be flushed or replaced. Try checking to see if the condenser is switching on/off according to the controls...it may just be staying on.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Sounds like a blend door issue since the AC is on with the defrost setting but getting cold air instead of hot.

As for help from the dealership with a "sold as is" here in CO your most likely SOL unless they feel kind and do it anyways, but don't hold your breath. It's a expensive fix to change that blend door motor as the dash has to be removed.

That's a major bummer. I would for sure let the Dealer know so they are aware of the issue who knows maybe they will be nice and help you out, there are some good people still left in the world, atleast I hope so. I would just be polite as possible. Also I see your in Denver!! Yeee Hawww, nice to see another Denverite on the forum, welcome! Keep us posted on how the repairs come along too.

The defroster actually uses the AC, because that's what draws the moisture out, and that's why the air coming out is cold. Turn the defrost off if you want max heat but obviously there are times that you need both.

However, your problem is likely the resistor for the heat system. It's accessible behind the glove box, you have to remove the glove box to get at it, but that's easy. Cost about 25.00 to replace it. Common occurrence on older Libertys.

That's the blower motor resistor. There is no heat resistor. If his fan works on all speeds, the resistor is fine.

I'm having issues with my 02 liberty. It had alot of crap in the coolant system. Flushed it out of radiator, engine and heater core, changed the thermostat. Air temp seems to be better than before on defrost but I thought it should be warmer. When engine is up to temp, about 85F on defrost and 100F when switched to vents. Is this a blend air issue or is heater core still the problem? I'm guessing its not a core problem because it is 100F in the vent mode? Please help. Im new to this type of help.
