Walked out to the garage to start taking the skids off and found a puddle under the KJ. It's red and seems to be coolant. Here are some pics:
Where the leak landed:

Odd wet spot on top of a pulley:

This is where my stupidity shows...not sure what that part is, but you can see it is just drenched. Taken from under the Jeep, it's above the oil filter kinda.

Then the bottom of the rad.:

For some reason I don't suspect the radiator that much, as that one part up top is drenched and the stuff on the radiator might have gotten there by getting slinged by the fan. I don't know.

Any advice? Thanks!

I'm quite the amateur, but I had similar issues a while ago. It was my water pump going bad. Tommudd and TwoBobsKJ helped me figure it out. I tested it by pulling the serpentine belt off and trying to wiggle the water pump pulley in place, and it was able to move around a lot (wobbling). It should be pretty solid in place. (This may not be a sure-fire way of testing it, though.)

That pulley you show seems to be the water pump pulley. It looks like it has coolant coming from it like mine did.

Again, I'm an amateur, but I had a similar experience to yours. Hope this helps.

Water pumps are cake if you don't have the dal fan setup. If you do run to the auto store and rent the fan wrench.

Thanks for the info...
Mine does have the dual fans, how much more does that complicate things? Would a NAPA reman one be a safe bet or should I get a new Mopar one?

Yea, the dual fan setup makes things "interesting"...

You'll need to remove the HD shroud after you loosen the fan clutch from the snout of the water pump. Here's the deal: The spanner wrench that enables you to hold the pump pulley while loosening the 36mm nut from the pump is hard to find. You could fashion one from bar stock and a couple of small bolts like in post #22 HERE, or...

Go to AutoZone and rent the water pump tool for the Ford 4.9 liter straight six. You'll use the smaller of the two wrenches in the box to loosen the nut on the pulley. Get a couple of bolts about 2 to 2 1/2 inches in length whose diameter is just small enough to slip through the holes in the pulley. Loosen the bolts holding the shroud so it's movable and remove the electrical connection. You'll have just enough room to move around in front of the engine.

Push the bolts through the pulley holes until they engage the fins on the water pump. Take the wrench noted above, place it over the 36mm nut. At the end of this wrench is a 1/2" square hole for a 1/2" drive ratchet; put a ratchet in the hole to give yourself additional leverage. Loosen the clutch nut by pulling toward the passenger side of the Jeep (counterclockwise.) You may bend the bolts going through the pulley slightly but they're to be thrown away when you're done anyway.

After a bit of coaxing the nut will loosen and then you can spin it off by hand. Once it's completely loose take out the fan and the shroud as a unit and proceed to take out the water pump (about 8, 15mm bolts if I remember right.)

To make my life easier the next time I have to get to the clutch or water pump I used my Dremel and trimmed the bottom of the shroud just enough to be able to slide it over the fan without having to take the fan and clutch off too. Don't want to take off so much that the efficiency of the shroud is compromised - just enough to wiggle the shroud out of the engine bay. When you put the new pump in, install the mechanical fan and measure how much material needs to be removed from the shroud. Some of the CRD folks have cut the shroud in half but made clips to hold it together for normal driving. Check over on LOST for pics and How-To's.

Hope this helps ya, HJ!

Got the nut broke loose, just having trouble getting the fan/shroud out. Any tips? Got the top bolts off, seems like some clips at the bottom are still attached and can't get the whole thing to move back enough to pull out.

Thanks

As long as the rad support bracket along the top is removed the shroud (and fan by default) should lift straight up. The bottom of the shroud just slides into clips on the bottom sides of the radiator.

I got it! Thanks.

Seems that all is ok, put on a new serpentine belt too.

Got another leak, from drivers side of the radiator it seems. Any thoughts? Probably from an efficient water pump.

Any thoughts on this? Are there any leak prone hoses or fittings near the top of the drivers side of the radiator?

I could almost swear it's the radiator going south... Happened on mine, I guess there is a designed weak
point that cracks before any other place to warn the owner about a fortcoming more serious failure..

Look for the 52080120AE, it seems to be a bit cheaper than other P/Ns, don't ask me why..

IIRC all radiators should fit, I've always wondered why Mopar has parts that serve the same purpose but are
priced differently..

52080120AC (Superseded by 52080120AE ) was for MY 2005 while 05183562AA for a 2006.

I've got a hunch they both fit..

Yeah OEM is definately the way I'll go, I recall you had some issues with aftermarket ones.

So if it's the engine rad (as opposed to the other one), it's the same regardless of having the tow package?

What about PS? You sure it's coolant? I can't really tell where I'm looking from the pics though. And I'm not as good as most of the other people on here automotive-wise.

I'm almost positive it's coolant, it's coming from the top corner of the rad. Plus it tastes like coolant.

Looks like coolant, smells like coolant, and even tastes like coolant. Must be coolant!! :) Best of luck on replacing the radiator! Hope it fixes this issue.
