I have to ask... why HOAT and not reg. antifreeze

OK, so today after being told by this thread - went back into my Lube Center place and asked them to swap out the coolant they put in a couple weeks back and replace it with HOAT coolant I brought along with distilled water.

I showed them the important parts of this thread and the guy there said he wanted to give the info to his manager.

They swapped the coolant out at no additional charge to me - which was great and what I've come to expect from them work wise.

As we were almost done, the manager who I've made friends with brought out a spec sheet on their coolant they use and said it should have been fine but that he was glad to make me happy.

I checked the ingredients and they looked the same as on the bottles of Zerex ZXGO51 G-05 Antifreeze that I brought in.

Theirs was Sure Temp Extended Life Formula Global Predilute Engine Coolant. Says it's an Ethylene Glycol-type antifreeze made by Hydrocarbon Recovery Services.

Chemical composition was Ethylene Glycol 44-47%, Diethylene Glycol 0-3%, Water 44-48% and inorganic corrosion inhibitors .5-1% and Organic corrosion inhibitors 1-2%.

So the question is - was it really safe what they put in? The mgr. insisted it was. Me, I wanted exactly what you guys recommended in my car so I'm glad I did it.

Just wanted some perspective :)

Pep boys has got g-05 just bought some and topped off yesterday, at least my pep boys does. I've saved many a Chrysler vehicle owner from buying plain antifreeze and ruining their engine, except for my buddy who has an 03 ram and refuses to get it because it's "too expensive". Well so is a new engine.:shakehead:

Well my buddy's been out of his truck for a few months since the engine went on him. :death:
And this is why we use the right coolant, not the cheapest.

Just for the record my NAPA had the Zerex GO5 stuff, $16 for the concentrate, 1 gal.

That's where I got mine and it is a good deal because it is concentrate and not 50/50 mix.

Im the second owner of my jeep and bought it from family. My cousin replaced the radiator a while back and filled it up with the "safe for all colors" type antifreeze with out knowing better. things seem to be ok but I am going to attempt to drain and flush the system now that I own the jeep. Any particular damage I should look for? Is it possible to truly do a system flush yourself or should I use the local dealer (I hate dealers). Thanks guys.

I was wpunderig if you have to use the straight hoat concentrate or use the 50/50

You want to end up 50/50 no matter which you buy. The premixed 50/50 just saves you from measuring it. It's also handy if you have a slow leak and just need to top off.

I was having some issues with overheating recently. I own a 03 liberty 3.7 auto. I did not realize that the wrong coolant could cause such an issue. Using the HOAT coolant helped. I love this site. I'm a sponge soaking up the info. Thanks everyone.

What many do not realize is also that the wrong coolant can cause corrosion and eat away at the OEM waterpump, damaging the plastic impeller inside too!
Then you can gloat, because you knew to always use HOAT !
Always use the Mopar thermostat & consider replacing the upper & lower rad hose all at once, if they have not been changed before.
