I have seen 2 types, one for shallow pan and one for deep pan. How do I know which one i have? If i got the wrong one, say the shallow filter and I have the deep pan, could it do damage?

It wouldnt even fit.

There is a difference in the # of bolts on the pan I believe.
Dont remember the numbers, what the parts stores have that data in the computer system. Count your bolts, and when you go to the store, ask them to make sure the filter your buying is for the right one

make sure and tell them it is for a 45RFE not 42RLE and you are good to go. or order off of rockauto.com and know you got the right stuff.
or if you are going to your local napa i like to look up all the part numbers ahead of time. and hand them to the guy at the counter so i get what i want and they dont sell me a cheaper brand

There is only one OE pan option for the 45RFE.

Why I hate places like rock auto, just like autozone and advance auto, that can not list options correctly for your vehicle.Always getting the wrong parts.

Oh and for the 45RFE trans only use OEM filters for the trans, more the spin on filter,as there is a issue with the drain back valves on older style OEM and aftermarket spin on filters for that trans.Oh and yes there are 2 filters in the 45RFE.

2wd generally uses shallow pan, 4wd deeper pan. Same setup for the Rams that use that trans.

Not to hijack the thread, but why can manufacturers not put a drain plug on transmission pans? Seems like it would be so much easier.

They may not come that way factory, but you can always add one. I've added one to the ****** pan on my KJ.
