Drove into town this morning and after about 10 miles i started hearing a grinding type noise. Got worse the more i drove it. Sounds like its coming from the transfer case. If ur sitting in the jeep the sound seems like its to the left of the 4 wheel drive shifter. It's an 03. 140,000 miles. anyway to tell if its the t-case or the front driveshaft??

$10 says it's the rear CV joint on the front driveshaft - the end that attaches to the transfer case.

30 minute fix with a part that will run you $55 plus shipping from DriveshaftParts.com. There is a How To in the - uh - How To section detailing the replacement.

And by the way... (welcome)

P.S. Whereabouts in Ohio are you?

Thanks for the reply. Im located in Cambridge, OH....It's kinda southeast i guess ud call it. I just had a chance to go out and look at the jeep before i read ur post and noticed that the rear cv on the front driveshaft is pretty much shot. The boot is not even there and you can actually see the bearings inside...so i'm hoping this is it, either way i know the cv needs replaced lol. Also does the front cv go out easily too on the driveshaft? Wondering if i should go ahead and replace it while i'll have it apart

i wouldn't worry about the front if it looks intact...the rear head is really what seems to be problematic. I had to do mine at about 80,000 miles. The link Bob gave you is where I got mine. There's a "how to" on the forum describing the rebuild as well...pretty straightforward though.

That's got to be your problem if the bearings are exposed. Seems like all the front driveshaft CVs have decided to fail this year- I've seen a huge rash of threads like this, and I just changed mine 2 months ago.

It's a good idea to put something over the hole in the front differential after you remove the drive shaft so crap doesn't get in there and you don't lose fluid.

Ok, is there a trick to getting this shaft out of the jeep?? I got it out the the t-case yoke and out the the front diff but i can't for the life me get it out of the jeep lol. it's like there's not enough space between the exhaust and the drive shaft. Do i need to unbolt the exhaust? Or maybe the cable bracket thats bolted on to the t-case?

Does yours have skid plates, on some models you have to remove the skid
Others the cable is somewhat in the way but should come out

no it doesn't have skid plates. As the front of the shaft is just starting to clear the rear cv will get caught on the cable bracket.

There's either one or two 15mm bolts holding the cable bracket on - pretty easy to get to them. Take them out so you can move the bracket enough to remove the shaft. Will pop right out then.
