Hi, I'm brand new to this forum and I'm looking for some help from all Liberty owners PLEASE...

I love Jeep liberty's and I have wanted to buy one for a long long time..

Well the time has come and I'm ready to go but I just want to make sure that I buy the right one. I've been looking and researching and trying to find the best information I can get so I've ended up here.

I'm sure all you Liberty owners are near experts... can you tell me what to look for and or what to avoid while I search for a used Liberty?

What are common problems or what do I look for that maybe the salesman wouldn't tell me..PLEASE help, I've been burned before buying a used car and I want my Liberty to be the best, a dream come true.

I'm in the range of 2002 to 2005... leaning more to the 2005

UPDATE;

Here is what i'm looking at right now... seems like a good one.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
2nd year run of '02 KJ's(made for almost 2 years),best year made of the KJ.That would be from 1/02-10/02.

Still get the 45RFE trans and no window regulator issues.Though one would be hard pressed to find a low mileage one as there 10+ years old now.

We have an 02 and 07 and love them. They get around great in the snow, the 07 does better in my opinon because it has ESP and ABS. No major problems or repairs yet, but stuff does happen.
Main things I check is for rusty transmission pan, any leaks from the engine, trans., transfer case, front and rear diffs.
If it looks clean, in good shape and well taken care of then I would be happy
Any used vehicle is a gamble.

Check for rust along the bottom of all the doors. Check for rust at the third brake light.

When you find one you like, take it to a GOOD mechanic and have it checked out mechanically this can also help in lowering the price if any issues are found. Also a good used car deal should have no problem with you taking it in to have it checkedl less they have something to hide. Oh and take pictures to show us what you got.

131K miles for $5500 seems too much. 131K kms maybe?

Not that far off from fair market value. If it's in stellar condition with all the service records then I'd spend that much.

05 Renegade if you can find one. The flat hood is key.

'02 is best. I have an '04. I dunno. I'm always big into checking out the trans. Make sure it shifts well, fast, and without studders.

Its been said before but ill say it again, get it checked by a mechanic.

And if he is posting on craigslist for 5500 obo, he is probably only expecting 5k so i would start lower than that and see what happens.

While having it checked over 1st is a very good idea make sure you either state you just bought it,never state your thinking about buying it.

Most techs are on flat rate pay and a "pre-purchase" inspection is the last thing they want to deal with because they don't pay anything for the time put in and no chance of getting any work if they find something wrong.Just a heads up as the powers to be make those inspections a money loosing job for any tech so a good once over may not be actually preformed.
