My 2006 CRD gets 7.8 L per 100 on hwy and combined 9.5 L. per 100. I change the fuel/water separator ever year, MAF sensor clean, tires at proper inflation, run good synthetic oil, and don't be a jack rabbit - that should be a good start. Love the diesel growl!

Contact Greendiesel Engineering....they re-program the ECU for either performance or for economy and can also improve the shifting of the transmission and disable the EGR with their tuning.
The CRD guys over at Lost have nothing but praise for the Eco tune....unfortunately here in South Africa it is too much effort to ship my ECU to them to do the Eco tune.

I would like to also add to the above ,,,a less restrictive muffler system. I run a 3" Magnaflow from the cat back and have seen 33mpg from Az. to So. Cal

With all respect to BillWill, putting a tune in the ECM is the LAST thing you should do as far as better fuel mileage - as in there are more important issues to be addressed as far as fuel mileage and needed maintenance - a tune should be the LAST step in that process.

THE #1 thing you can do to increase not only fuel mileage but performance and reliability as well - FUEL SUPPLY PUMP or "LIFT" PUMP!!!! Best option is the fuel tank module from a 2005-up Dodge Cummins with an Airtex in-tank fuel pump built in. No matter what type or brand you end up rigging up, it should be capable of supplying at least 8 psi or better pressure downstream of the fuel filter to get the most benefit.

I fully agree that a lift pump will increase reliability but I fail to see how that will improve economy. First thing to do is the basics...clean sensors, air and fuel filter and of course tire pressures. Basically what revray said. Definitely nothing wrong with fitting a lift pump though.

I have no affiliation to GDE...we do not have access to their products here!
I only know that on a lot of KJ sites users concur that GDEs' tuning of the ECU can get you either better economy OR better performance...depending on the option taken.. while at the same time getting the auto-box to shift at the correct time and partially disabling the EGR which is a pain.

My 2002 2.5 manual CRD gets about the same figures as revray does and I am pretty happy with that....if I achieved worse figures I would definitely be asking questions as diesel is getting way too expensive lately:freak3:

removing the cat?

Has anyone removed the cat on their CRD? My CRD in the US is fitted with a cat but the one we have here in Australia are not. It seems that the cat would be restricting flow significantly.

Is there any reason with sensors, etc. that one could not remove the cat? The car is registered in Santa Fe, so emissions are not a factor for concern.

Cheers,

Josh

A few things. Get a Green Diesel Engineering CPU chip (I have the hot tune) and transmission tune. I drive 58mph on the highway and I get 35+ mpg. Ive gotten 38 before. I recently drove from Seattle to Phoenix and I get 36.5mpg on the trip down here. Take a LONG time to get to highway speed and drive 58mph at 1680 rpm and you'll do very well.

Green Diesel Engineering!
I run 245/75/16 tires (31" Hankook Dynapro ATM...mild tread all-terrain) and an OME lift with a grill guard and get a real 30mpg @ 75 mph hwy,
35mpg @ 60-65mph,
24-26mpg towing a car on a dolly at 60-65 mph.
I have confirmed the odo reading with GPS and use actual gallons consumed.

AND more power when needed. This is not just a speed tune...it increases drivability, power and mileage while reducing soot in the intake and oil.
Gets rid of the annoying surge and smoke from start.
Obviously, if you use the increased power a lot, you will not get this mileage...but look at my towing mileage: still amazing.
Stock, I got 26-28 at 75 mph, no lift, tires, or towing.

No, I don't work for Keith, just a very satisfied customer.
Oh, I also run his trans tune.

Anywhere I want to
Was good to read all the great ideas. My 2005 was getting 33 MPG before the recall and the detuning. I am open to ideas and suggestions. We are currently in the Atlanta, GA area. I had my jeep back to the dealers so my times they did not want to see me. Finally said that they could not help me. Sometimes I was getting 14 MPG. Help!

I noticed Rick Shaw touting 33 mpg from AZ to CALI. I live in AZ and the warmer temperatures produce better mpg's. I can get 32 hwy if I keep my foot tame. Usually, it is nearer 28. Sounds as if you are running too cool to me.

You guys make me feel bad! My crd has been getting right at 19mpg. Best ive got since ive owned it (since march) was 24mpg. That was cruising around 75mph on the whole tank. Ive got the replacement fuel heater coming in the mail right now.... pretty sure that it will help a little. The original is leaking slightly out the connecter port. Anyone know some descent all terrain tires that dont effect mileage that much?

No need to send the ECU to GDE, buy the programmer, Keith will mail it to you. Then follow the instructions, exchange a couple of E-mails with Keith, plug the programmer into your OBD2 port, follow the instructions and you're done. Simple process.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Man I'd have to make a 2 mile round trip out of my way to get fuel if I had a diesel.7 gas stations between my place and work and not one has diesel, closest is about a mile in the completely wrong direction.

I know this is an old thread, but I came across it when doing a websearch for how to save fuel with a 2.8 CRD...I have a UK 2005 spec 2.8 CRD Sport with the Mercedes NSG370 6 speed manual box. Diesel is expensive here in the UK (cheapest near me is £1.15 per litre...It costs about £80 ($100) to fill her up! So I am always looking at ways to save fuel. I have done a couple of mods...I use Alfamotors DK365 road tyres that have an excellent Euro B rating for both economy and wet grip, as well as having a long wear life. These are fitted to ZJ 5.9 Limited edition Ultrastar alloys, that weigh 1kg less each than the stock wheels that came with my KJ. They also increase the track by 3 inches without having to use spacers. Another mod I have done is to swap the heavy steel "paddlewheel" viscous fan for a lighter 11 blade Plastic version from the 3.7 V6 as I heard it can save fuel...I only fitted it yesterday so it's too early to tell if it actually saves me any fuel, but I will know in a few days. It is certainly a lot quieter than before. The metal fan weighs 3.4kg and the plastic one weighs 2.8kg, so that is 600g less weight on the fan idler pully. The 9 blade plastic fan from the KK would be even lighter, but I couldn't afford that one (it was £70 used vs £25).

You can't get the Green Doesel Engineering (GDE) tunes anymore but there's a Marko(???) tune. I'll try to repost with better info.
