Yeah, old is relative.. both in my age and in how long I've been a member of the board. I remember the day it was created although I didn't sign up for a bit.
As for the Liberty, I still have it, but it never was officially mine, it was always the gf's (we're on 13 years of living together) but like any "marriage" (common-law) I have access to it most days. I haven't really done anything to it in the past few years, I changed the front corner markers to white instead of orange, and I built a utility box for the trunk area (matching carpet, drawers locks and the whole bit). After taking up most of the trunk area with the box, I was "banned" from mods to the Liberty so I gave up on it. But it's been through a lot, and has never let us down. Goes camping pulling a tent trailer, hauls rock and dirt in my utility trailer, pulls small tree stumps and was a blast when I used to take it off road however after bending the factory side step bar, it hasn't seen actual off road since 2007 (camping and grassy fields doesn't count as off road)
In regards to my vehicles, when we got the Liberty I was driving a Dodge neon which in 08 I stopped driving. Got a $500 beat up, trashy, old 95 tercel which 6 months later blew a ring at 100km/h on the highway, limped it to work and home, then wreckers. Drove the neon again for a few months, then got a 2001 Escape 4cyl 4WD (5spd) for 3k but had to replace the read end 4WD unit ($2k). Just last night (Aug 01, 2012), the timing belt in the Escape ripped (interference style engine) so the valves are gone, at $2k to replace that and being that I went to replace clutch last week, but the mechanic ran out of time and only did oil the change, that's another $800. at $2800+ (there's always extra charges) I'm taking the Escape to the scrapyard and looking for something else.

Now for the decision, what to buy next (used only, not new). I just bought a 22.5 acre piece of forested land in Northern Ontario (Canada). It has a stream, and a 3 stage waterfall, it's very stunning to see. The land has a wide snowmobile/ATV trail cutting across it, just a grassy/weedy path. Being brave when I was there by myself I went down the trail to the bottom of the waterfall in the Escape, and promptly got stuck as I didn't have enough power to climb the 15-20 degree hill. So I slipped the hell out of the clutch and managed to get it up to the top (that's why I needed a new clutch). Since I'll be spending a lot of time at the property, and will be clearing a lot of land to build I'm thinking Liberty Diesel. Reasons for this is the diesel is like having the power of a V6 (dragging trees) with the fuel economy of a 4cyl, keep in mind that the property is over 3 hours drive one way from my house and if I go every weekend it gets expensive on gas.

So toss ideas out there for what I should buy next (again, used only, not new), I'll be listening intently. For the time being I'll be borrowing my parents '04 dodge caravan, and will be looking to spend as little time in that as possible. Keep in mind that I drive around 1000miles (1600kms) a week in the summer and about 720miles (1150kms) a week in the winter. So primarily it needs to be reliable, comfortable, prefer a double din deck (my dvd deck keeps me entertained, don't want to replace it) and above all it'll HAVE to have 4WD for when I go check on my property in the winter and so I don't get stuck on that hill on the property in the summer.

It kinda feels good to be back here and posting again.

JK, TJ, YJ, CJ, or the likes, I won't buy one. I won't say "ever" but it'd have to be a cold day somewhere usually very hot before I'd buy one... and I'm not talking the Caribbean!

I don't know why I have a strong opinion about that because heck if I wanted an affordable "true" off road vehicle, it's my very first choice (that and a Unimog), I'd slap a 6" lift on it and wheel the crap outta it! I just don't think I could handle the "bumpy" on-road manners for my day to day commute (and I don't know how expensive they are on fuel).

I'm considering the Diesel Liberty, it's my first choice because it's able to tow things, yeah it's got the 7500lb capacity (even better than my limit of 5,000lbs on the gf's 3.7L), but basically I'm looking for something with a 3500lb capacity or better. And mostly because it's supposed to get about 500miles (800kms) per tank (which I realistically translate into 430miles (700kms) per tank)
I'm not against having 2 of the same vehicles in the garage, and the Liberty also has the benefit of actually fitting on MY side of the garage (my side has a shelving unit at the back of the garage).

A few things I want to know about the CRD models are
1. What transfer case is available for the 05, 06 CRD. Command-Trac, Selec-Trac?
2. Are there differences by year? Remember the difference in the mid 03's when they changed from the "beefy" transmission to the smaller transmission (increased the leg room in the front passenger foot well).
3. Is one year better than the other, if so, why?
If these Q's have already been answered, then point me in the right direction (link)

If I was in the market for a used 4X4 right now (Either a first 4X or a second 4X4),
I'd look at the newer Diesel Land Cruisers being imported into Canada.
Especially here on the West Coast. Ok, they are Right hand drive and allot of manual transmissions.
Most are already lifted, have at least 33 inch tires on decent looking 4X4 aftermarket wheels.
I've seen many with OME suspension, fully skid plated, and ARB locked front and rear. Bubble front window blasters (Rally style Vent Visors) ARB bumpers, skorkels, etc.
Good prices as well for the model year and overall condition of the vehicle.

As much as we love our KJ, lets face it, there is far more aftermarket support in other models of 4X4's!

I think you are on the right track with the crd kj for what you want to use it for. Sure there are better 4x4s out there, better trucks on gas milage, and trucks with better towing capacity. You want all these things as well as comfort. The vehicles that come to mind for me win in other catagories but always lack in others. For example, full size extended cabs have the comfort and towing without the milage. Smaller trucks like the tacoma doublecab would be a close option but the diesel option is gone. Good luck with anything you get, I'm sure you will make it your own.

How about a ZJ with the 4.0? A good 96-98 Grand Cherokee is great in the snow, great off road, comfortable, and cheap to own. They get comparable mileage to a KJ and the 4.0 has plenty of torque for tree stump pulling, etc.

One of my personal favorites is the Toyota Tacoma (yes, some foreign vehicles are nice...). I also wouldn't mind a nice used F150. If you're not looking that big, and can deal with a lower, AWD, perhaps a nice Subaru would fit? It really all depends on your needs. If you don't need a pickup truck, maybe another Jeep would be right for you. If you don't want to go as big as the Jeep, maybe an AWD something or other would be more your fit.

Nah, pickups are out of the question. I've got 2 Labrador retrievers that spend a good deal of time in my vehicle, Unless I'm getting into larger quad cabs they just won't do. And larger quad cabs (king cabs) are just gonna burn fuel and my $$. I'm not into putting my dogs in the bed of a pickup (cap or no cap, with the dogs caged or not caged, never gonna happen). But on the truck side of things, with different life circumstances, I'd buy a Ford F series. I've seen a few Raptors around and I REALLY like them, but alas that's $$ that I don't have.
Last night I saw a beat up POS YJ, rusted all to crap, no seats, hardtop but it looked like it had all new glass (except the windshield). If it ran, and I could find two seats, it would be a perfect vehicle for my property (not road worthy, but who cares.. just ON property bushwacking). Then I could buy the Subaru WRX STi that I've always wanted for on road... oh wait... $$... no I couldn't.

Only change I know of from 05-06 CRD's is 06's have ESP. Both have the 545RFE (5 speed of the 02/early03 45RFE).

Late nineties.. too old. 4.0L would be too heavy on fuel $$, see above msgs for my weekly mileage driven.
The best compromise is the liberty diesel with it's power and fuel economy.
I'm going to look into it more seriously. Going to take one for a drive to see if the diesel "noise" is as quiet (or noisy) as some say. Everyone has a different opinion on the diesel "clatter" so I've gotta check it for my self. I've got acquaintances giving me all kinds of help, and one guy has a used car dealers license so he offered to take me to the auction and buy under his name with no markup. I just might have to take him up on that offer.

Does that mean the passenger foot area is smaller? One of the BIG differences I noticed n the late 03's and 04's (my gf's 04) is the 42RLE transmission, being smaller, allowed for more foot room on the front passenger side.

I trade currencies for a living. Any amount of ESP would be helpful, maybe it'll allow me to predict the future and become rich... 06 it is!!
Oh wait... that's NOT the ESP you meant is it :-(

WK with the diesel? Gives you and the dogs a little more room. Should pull plenty and get decent fuel economy.

Only other decent option I see.

One I'm also looking into, problem is cost. I just don't think I can afford it. The guy that said I could go to the auction and buy under his name might allow me to rethink that option.
