just revisiting this problem, which is still occuring...
i have tried wedging some small piece of plastic in the connector (yellow) at the clock spring, that doesnt seem to help any...

i really doubt it is the clock spring, all of the cruise control and horn functions work 100% of the time.

i will probably have to get a scanner and have the system checked.

any other tips?

I just replaced my steering column and now I'm getting that light. I think either some connector is mussed or the clock spring in my replacement column is messed up. bah. Will the car pass inspection if the light is on?

just and update for anyone following this or looking to it in the future, had the dealer do a scan of the air bag system, came back as a faulty left front impact sensor, they wanted 119.60 for the part and installation, the counter guy tried to tell me it is behind the bumper...it is not it is next to the radiator, very easy to get, 25$ later i have a used one from the junkyard and it is working fine.

for what its worth, there was an 02 and an 04 at the yard the 04 sport had different sensors, so i am guessing 02/03 are the same and 04+are different...
