Left a family dinner last night and my uncle tried to pass me with his F-150 (extended cab, 4wd, 4.6), he didn't quite make it. I left him a couple lengths behind me. Kinda surprising, honestly. Those 4.6's are stout!

Still a small displacement V8 (about 281 cubic inches) in a truck (1/2 ton Ford about 5000lbs-ish). I find a Liberty with tuning and OD locked out is actually fun to drive once you get past 2000 rpm.

If I really wanna push the 3.7, I'll drop out 2-4, then I'll shift the lever to drop out only 3-4, then I'll shift into Drive, and kick out the OD. I try not to do it that often because my transmission isn't really too strong. She hates shifting into 4.

Where did you get your tune done? Cost?

Search feature is your friend, but I will help you:

Hypertech has also released a tuner that includes 3.7 Liberty's. I may try this if I have the $$ to spend. Since I didn't plan on going nuts with physical engine mods, I got a couple 'canned' style tunes from a guy who figured out how to do it a while back with an SCT 9550. It was $250 for the 4 tunes, I picked up the SCT elsewhere for like $50. IIRC $350 gets you lifetime custom tune updates for that particular vehicle/engine combo. Since the only real engine upgrade I plan to do to it at some point is install a 4.7, I didn't pay the extra for the updateable.

Good win. The power to weight on the 2 vehicles should be very similar, though the 4.6 is very underpowered for what it is in the f150s

My wife was driving the Jeep and tried to race me once in my Ram. Didn't work out so well.

Talked to a guy who had an F150 with the Ecco boost
"Junk and not worth it"
said he was lucky to see better than 18 mpg highway
with nothing in the truck
considering that my 9000+# F250 with the 5.4L gets
14-15 highway I would say that *****
he also said that it did not pull as well as his old truck
with the 4.6L V8
And I will not get into the explorer Ecco boost
5000# SUV with a 2.0L 4 ******
275hp or not thing must be a snail

I work with a guy who has the F150 Ecoboost, and it's working out pretty well for him. He gets 22 MPG highway (empty, mind you) and 16-17 around town. For equal mileage as my KK, I think that truck's doing pretty well.

I too am wondering about the longterm reliability about a dual turbo V6 put into a truck--and driven like a truck. If these things end up lasting, I'll get one--but not until they are out for a few years to work out the kinks. I mean, look at the Duramax Diesel fiasco...

Well, since I've never driven one, I can't really say, but "one guy's" opinion is just that, one opinion. I'm not knocking it, just not educated enough on the subject to know whether it has substance or not.

I've learned that what works for one person, may not work for another. Also, suppose that guy wanted to do more with the truck than he expressed to the salesman, or the salesman exaggerated the abilities of the motor. That would also influence the way that guy feels about his truck.

I'm just sayin', from watching that thing out-accelerate, and out-haul a Hemi, which I personally have owned, it appears to me that motor should be more than adequate (interestingly though, they didn't compare it to the 5.4....wonder why???).

Perspective is a funny thing, back in the 90s my Ford Bronco with a 5 liter EFI was not a bad performer and it still got about 15 mpg, Yet look at today, my liberty is the same wheelbase and has roughly the same hp and torque numbers, in fact the liberty is better slightly, all this from a v6 engine. Technology has done wonders for the gas engine. It just depends on what application its in, I too have seen numerous complaints about the v6 ecoboost on Ford and it does not carry the freight in the real world. Its not only limited to the blue oval, Chrysler has had its share of complaints regarding the new pentastar engine in the dodge durango, its a dog, but in the Grand Cherokee, works well, in fact in the Durango they are calling it the Pantingstar engine. GM fans are stll wondering why in the Siverados and Sierra half tons with the 4.8 gm still insists on using a 4 speed ******. The way that fuel prices both gas and and especially Diesel are going way up people are going to keep turning to short term solutions.

Oh, and another interesting point. My Hemi only got about 12 MPG, empty, mostly highway. I did put bigger tires on it, but other than that, it was stock.

So to "only" get 18 MPG isn't much to be ashamed of. My KJ is currently hitting the 16.5 MPG mark, so a fullsize pickup with more HP and TQ, getting more MPG than my Jeep...again, don't see what's to complain about.

This should give you some indication....pretty impressive if you ask me....

Ford F-150 EcoBoost Torture Test | Watch the Video Here | Ford.com

That is an advertising video that you only see parts of. I'll wait to see owners' (all of them I have read lately talk much shit on varying forums) long term opinions. Diesels with turbos doing real work last because they are built so damn heavy duty that you have to try hard to break a well built diesel. Twin turbo gas engine is traditionally a car engine (this one started out in the Taurus), only GM put a turbo in a pair of trucks before this (Syclone & Typhoon) and they weren't designed to be used as trucks.

I'll say turbo and low end torque (what you really need in a truck) don't go hand in hand.

ever heard of diesel? ;)

acutally a small twin turbo setup on gas is pretty torquey. big turbos make more power but lag, small turbos spool faster making power quicker but dont make top end power.

id definitely prefer the ecoboost in my kj over the weak 3.7 any day.
