How to get optimum fuel mileage?

I'm new to this forum but I've tried the search feature and it wasn't much help.

My question is, how do I get best mileage?
I mean as far as a programmer or intake/exhaust or something like that.

not tire pressure or gearing or additives

any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Feller, I think it's a matter of driving habit. Too conservative and you foul the system, over aggressive and you'll lose milage at the pump. Got to find a happy medium I think.

For yourself - basically a light foot! Don't let the revs go above 18-1900 - seems to be the most efficient range once the engine is thoroughly warmed up, but this can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

For the vehicle - clean fuel filter, keep the air filter clean - either replace the standard one when they say - or just check it weekly for heavy contamination (dust and so on - depending on the conditions of where you drive), or fit an Amsoil one and vacuum it regularly.

If you want to spend a bit more - consensus opinion favours the GDE ecotune. It's not a magic bullet - if you are heavy on the throttle you won't get much (economy)benefit, but combined with the above, you do apparently see a benefit quite quickly. I should say that I'm planning on getting one when I can afford it. The GDE also delivers all sorts of other drivability benefits other than just fuel economy - check out the various threads from users.

A more open exhaust can help by removing/reducing gas flow restrictions - Magnaflow seems popular among many users. Again - check users threads to see what benefits they report.

Other than that - its common sense. Don't carry weight (tools etc) that you don't need; road-biased tyres will give better economy than ats and much better than muddies - depends on your proposed usage. I have Grabber AT2s fitted because they suit my usage so I take the relatively small mileage hit. Use the best quality fuel and oils you can - even then flush out the fuel system occasionally with one of the diesel fuel additives that clean the system and the injectors. Occasionally, (how often depends on your mileage and usage) find a sloping road - a ramp up to a motorway can be good - just with nothing in front of you, and blast up with wide open throttle (NOT into the red line); this can soften and then blast out deposits on the VVT. If you see a cloud of black smoke behind you for a little bit, that's the crud going. If you don't, then your system was clean. You don't need to do this often - I do it every couple of years, but then I'm not doing big mileages. It's more of a problem if you do a lot of short range stop/start driving.

Other than that - and subject to more experienced users comments, regular, careful maintenance is your friend:)

Welcome to the forum.

To give you an idea of my driving conditions, I am in Upstate NY where there is no traffic and the biggest nearby city is only 35,000 people. Pretty rural. (1,800 population where I am) 55mph roads and interstate driving to get anywhere. Best I can get is between 20-21 highway. My in town is around 15-16 but we only have 2 traffic lights so I don't stop much. Last time I was in a real city I was getting 13-14mpg.

I just keep it tuned up and check tire pressure. In the back is recovery stuff, 2 air compressors and tire repair kit, tools, 2 jacks, full backpack, too much misc stuff to list. 250lbs at least. I am not taking the stuff out and I don't play lightfoot with the gas pedal. I use 4wd every chance I get. It's a Jeep.

Lots of RADAR

On one long trip, I got 34MPG due to having lots of RADAR around me.
Even with all my mods:
2006 Pearl Green CRD

The RADAR helped a lot, it must have done something on the molecular level to the fuel to maximize the burning in the cylinders. :happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175:
Perhaps the Police should try aiming RADAR at their engines to save more fuel too.
I just can't wait to see the add in Sky Mall Magazine selling a RADAR kit to add to my CRD to get more fuel economy. :happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175:

A few things. Get a Green Diesel Engineering CPU chip (I have the hot tune) and transmission tune. I drive 58mph on the highway and I get 35+ mpg. Ive gotten 38 before. I recently drove from Seattle to Phoenix and I get 36.5mpg on the trip down here. Take a LONG time to get to highway speed and drive 58mph at 1680 rpm and you'll do very well.

I have added an EDGE chip upgrade to my system, but have not seen any great improvement in the MPG area yet. Open to other suggestions. Where do you get the ECU reprogramed in the USA?
