3 or 4 days ago, after swapping in the Sears Platinum P-1 battery, I tried using the CD player - AM/FM/6 disc CD factory unit - all it would do was make cycling/grinding noises and come up with "CD ERROR" on the display. Tried several times to simply eject the CD's, no go, and on the last attempt started making a nasty grinding sound.

These are store bought CD's, so I'm pretty sure it's not the fault of the discs. Volume control knob had went funky over a year ago, so I was already looking at replacing it.

From searching thru the forum and the FSM, seems the only way to remove the CD's now is to remove the radio and disassemble it - is that a correct assumption, or is there a way to remove them short of this?

Just buy an aftermarket radio. Even if you fix it, who is to say it won't eat your CDs again. You can get a very decent head unit for $100-$150 with features that will make your existing system sound so much better. Even a $100 low end model will be a huge improvement. You can go with a Kenwood eXcelon series. Good luck.

Swapping head unit is very easy in Jeep.

Or, you might can find someone with a stock CD-changer radio that they just took out for an aftermarket one that they might be looking to sell.

I might know a guy.

As far as I know though, if you can't get the radio to respond, you will have to take it apart to get the CD's out.
