I really dont know much about gear swaps but is there a easy way to do it? i know this is a stupid question but i have read a lot on here and other forums that 4:10's would help a lot. so what all do i need to send it to a shop to do it? is there like a plug and play kit (ie just pull the rear case and swap them). im asuming there is much more to it. so can someone please fill me in?

like i said im sure its a stupid question but my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Front diff has to be completely taken out of the vehicle to swap in new gears, so there lies an extra charge for vehicles like the KJ
Yes you have to have special tools to set backlash, spreaders, etc
there is no "plug and play" way of doing it, must do it the right way or replace what you just installed in a very short time.
Find a good reputable shop and pay the man

Some places like to supply their own parts but others you can bring your own in so depends
But only DanaSpicer make the front gears so that choice is easy to make

He is running 265/70's so he is drinking fuel
However reading his sig he will/does need more
than just 4.10's
But yes from reading the post and questions it is
best to leave this job to the pros
If I were you I would contact the local 4X4 club
and find out who they use
You will need a front ring and pinion along with bearings
and seals ,same for the rear
While you are spending money just as well lock it
rather than pay for labor twice

not worth the amount of fuel one may save... unless your tires are oversized and you need them.

You'd be surprised evenwith 245-75s or 265-70s. Friend re-geared his running 265-70s and it cruises a lot better without downshifting all the time and gets better mileage as well.
If you just look at the MPGs you may think it takes a long time to pay for them but with the engine running better, trans not shifting in and out all the time etc its way better overall for your Jeep in the long run

Well here are some choices for lockers
ARB (front and/or rear)
these can be turned on/off as needed they require
an air source and complete installation of switches
and compressor will get pricey
Detroit Locker (rear only) ("auto locker")
give the jeep some gas and the rear is locked
Probably the best you can buy and in a KJ will
never fail
Detroit Tru-trac (front or rear)
While these are not lockers they work very well
I would pair 1 of these with a Detroit Locker in the rear
For a 100% bullit proof and fail proof setup

In my TJ I run a Detroit Locker rear and an ARB front
I rarely need the ARB
With the Detroit out back in 2wd I can climb a 2' high
stump with the front tires at street psi
Or walk through a drainage ditch that is the same 2' depth
in 2wd ,made a guy with a Tahoe on 35's sick when he got
stuck in 4wd

Front gears will be dealer only
Rear gears they can get
Detroit Locker rear is a good choice
Remember that your Jeep will handle different
For the front I would go with a Detroit TT

You may want to "play the game"
Get a price for gears then show up with gears and lockers
there should be no additional cost
you have to pull the carrier either way

i called 2 shops and the best price i got was 12-$1400 out the door in parts and labor for just re gearing and they said they would just charge me what the parts cost to lock them and they would have it done in 2 days tops. I can get the parts myself but i need to know what lockers to buy.

i want the Detroit locker in the rear and i have no idea for the front if i am even going to lock the front at all. would it be stupid to not lock the front? they said if i can afford it do it because it will save me labor costs later.

so where should i buy the lockers from and what one do i need? anyone have a website or a link?

Those are lunchbox lockers, not a wise choice unless you like poping and banging. You can't use the front one anyways on a KJ.

Full Detroit in the rear and the Truetrac up front and you will have a very good combo.I loved my ARB rear and front DTT setup whne I was still IFS,now I run F/R ARB's.

I must agree
Lunch box lockers ,like those listed, are junk
I broke 2 on back to back rides
neither trail was better than a 3 diamond out of 5
I have put the Detroit through the ringer with no
problems ,I can not say that about the ARB
I have a slight blow back issue when I release it
and the oil is hot
