is there a "wth is that noise" section?...

the sound is a rhythmic whoompwhoompwhoomp coming from the front, quite possibly the front right. if i drive slow its a long whoomp. faster i go, the faster the whoomps(science!)
- sound intensifies when 4wd is engaged and after i take my foot off the gas.
- dont hear it when im making a sharp turn into a parking spot.
- i dont think its tire noise cause another tire is driving me insane.
- was present when front drive shaft was removed.

there is also a squeak that comes and goes. consistently audible at 35mph, on and off after that speed. goes away when i brake but whoomp is still there till i come to a stop. i lifted the front and spun both wheels and they turned smoothly. the squeak is coming from the right wheel and consistently squeaked in same location after a full turn.
- car does not pull when brake applied
- steering wheel does not wobble when brake applied

i ll eventually take it to mechanic but wanna know if anyone else has had a similar sound and if so how much i ll be spending on repairs this holiday season... thoughts other than get a new jeep?

My guess is a bad CV on the passenger side - probably both sides, actually.

Mine is starting to make similar noises - the noises have been described by others here as a 'groan,' 'thump,' 'shudder,' etc. Hard do describe/define noises in cars. Kinda like trying to describe the taste of vanilla ice cream. I know it when I taste it but I can't tell you what to expect... :icon_lol:

Get under the Jeep and try to move the CV housings back and forth, up and down. If there is a bit of movement you're probably on your way to a replacement. Not that expensive and relatively easy to do. Check the How-To section.

Oh, and the noise can be there whether you have 4WD engaged or not, though it makes sense that it's louder in 4WD. Seems counter-intuitive but noisier when you let off the gas makes sense too.

How's your alignment? I had a very similar noise after Sears screwed my alignment up after the lift..... :disgust: Does it make more noise turning? Both ways or just one?

i ll try and place my phone on the passenger side and see if i can record the sound.

i hope its just something simple as the rotor. i ll check the CV joints. i have an unreasonable fear of touching brakes so maybe i ll face this fear and just do it myself. out of all the sounds i could think of, whoomp best matched... more like a whooOOOoomp with capital Os being the loudest sound.

alignment is meh... cross camber is within tolerance +0.5 or as town fair tire says "its perfect". i thought perfect would be 0 but what do i know. tires are making the jeep pull to one side. i dont recall hearing the noise when im turning. should also going to check if it makes it when im backing up.

thanks all

Checking for play in the CV's is easy, checking for a warped rotor is much harder. Unless the rotor is really really warped that is.

well the noise change to what sounds like a heart beat at slow speeds and bouncy ball with a smaller ball inside at high speeds. going to drop it off tomorrow to get it looked at.

yeah its a combo of things. the ball joint has a tearing the boot and the bearing is on its way. but the cv and rotor are fine.

thru a process of elimination it ended up being... im gonna say passenger side inner cv joint.

1. drive shaft boot torn and crunchy cv replaced.
2. transfer case chewing metal. got a used one from scrap yard.
3. replaced intermediate shaft and passenger half shaft.

...and all is quiet
