Like many before me i have joined a not so exclusive club. The club of the roadside poster. Lol. So I was driving on the interstate and I start to notice I'm loosing hp and I'm spending most of my time looking at the tac. The. All of a sudden I hear something sounds like clicking so I pull over. As I'm getting off jeep stalls. We pull over coolant is boiling in the reservoir. I loom at the coolant gauge it's pinned. I'm 99% sure my water pump is toast. Which is fixable but now that the jeep is cooled for 2 hours now and refuses to turn over at all everything's cranking. Nothing is seized. But no response from the engine. Me and my friend are stumped. And I'm 324 miles from home and you can subtract one mile from that when the tow truck tows me to the advanced auto parts store. Any help would be appreciated. And thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
In Watertown without a water pump. (matt)

I am confused. You say it refuses to turn over but everything is cranking? Do you mean the engine cranks but will not start? Did you notice the engine temp climbing before it stalled out?

Is it getting fuel? Check all your Fuses.
You fuel pump could of died causing leaner conditions and overheating.

Year? Miles? Still paying for it?

Your looking at between $2000-$5000 for a engine depending if getting new/remaned/used and if you or a shop will be doing the swap.It could be worth it to put a remaned engine in(not one from advance auto either,Jasper remans are good) if the rest of the KJ is in good condition or if your still paying for it.

hi there sailor422, looks like you and me are in the same boat, my 02 limited did the head gasket, then fried the main bearings, so im up for a new engine as well!, but the only difference is im in australia, and a second hand motor here is in the 4k region, reman is 6k, hell they wanted 300 to grind the crank, so guess it will be spanners out!
good luck with yours, really not that hard to pull the motor out, if your gonna do it, i suggest you label everything you unplug! and be prepared for a struggle getting the starter out, oh and you probably wont be able to turn the crank by hand in order to unbolt the torque converter from the driveplate, i had to pull the tc out still attached to the motor, then unbolt it!
anyway good luck whatever you decide to do

how did you get the starter out,im struggling with that i cant undo the wire from the solenoid or get the top bolt off on the heat shield.i removed the 4wd driveshaft do i have to remove the downpipe from the exhaust manifold as well

also how do you get the torque converter to stay in the transmission

SORRY FOR THE DELAY, 1 nut to undo the wire from solenoid, bit fiddly, but get someone to hold the starter while you get the nut off, took me about an hour, on my own! i didnt remove the downpipe, if you cant turn the motor by hand to remove the torque converter bolts ( 4 of them) dont worry just let it come out still attached to the motor then simply unbolt it when the motors out, just mark both parts so you know which hole lines up with which. are you replacing the motor or rebuilding?
