My 2003 jeep liberty renegade has had the clutch replaced twice due to chatter. When the clutch is not pressed its a noticable chatter. Even with a new clutch (pressure plates, throw out bearings, disc etc.) the chatter still exists and its driving me crazy. Mechanic claimed its just enginee noise, if it is engine noise why does it go away when I press on the clutch? Please respond if you think you know the answer

um.... if pressing the clutch in (and disengaging it from drive power) makes the noise go away... that sounds like a throwout bearing problem. a clutch really can't rattle/chatter when it's fully engaged/squished between the pressure plate and the flywheel. unless the hub of the disc is totally fubar'ed. 99% of the time it's going to be a throwout bearing problem.

I agree that's the same thing i was told about my 03 rene.Throwout bearing noise.

I also agree, throwout bearing! But, how can it be fixed? Im going for a third clutch replacement (pressure plate, disc, release bearing, fork, ect.), and also replaced the flywheel once with less than 15,000 between them. There must be something else wrong. Is there something Im missing that I should look for and/or replace while im under their (mechanic did the first two)?

my gut reaction is... the throwout bearing wasn't installed right. I'd quadruple-check the retaining mechanism to make sure it's actually working and holding the bearing in place properly. maybe have the parts store pull a couple different brands of bearings out and compare them? possible the one coming with the clutch if it's a complete kit is a cheap POS?

Did you fit a new flywheel or have the existing one machined flat?
The flywheel on the manual KJs cannot be machined flat..the friction plate is deliberately rounded so only very fine emery cloth can be used on the flywheels...never flat machining.:disgust:

Correct sir! The first clutch, the mechanic machined my flywheel, and it turned into a big fight. That is why I replaced it with a OEM new flywheel.
However, the old machined flywheel was ran with the new clutch for 3-6 weeks before the new flywheel went in. All new parts, problem still there, worse than before.
