First time Off-roading with my Liberty

I am going up to Silver Lake the weekend of June 25th. I will be taking a 4 wheeler up there but I kinda want to drive my liberty renegade on the dunes. Will it get around just fine out there? I'm not a novice driver to dunes or off-roading but am novice to the liberty out there.

Yep, should be fine. If you're already well learned in sand driving, you'll have no issues.

air down 15 psi isnt much air but on sand that should be about right. with the tires we have not being as big as some jeeps I would not go lower than 15 -20 psi. I did 20 pai a Raush creek but then thats different off road driving than dunes, RC is forest and mine trails with rocks stumps and things. The liberty will suprize you with what it can do. I suprized some wrangler and XJ folks form the local jeep shop I was with once. I had mine there for inspection yesterday and one of the guys that works there and was on that trip now has a Liberty he lifted and is building up.

I just took my 04 Liberty to the OuterBanks last week.
Used the 4 wheel drive for the first time (bought jeep in Feb. )
Seemed like it was struggling a bit.Then started making grinding and clunking noises. When I got off the beach my transfer case was smoking.Put it back in 2wd and limped it home, still making noises occasionally.
Let it cool off , tried to shift it to 4wd and then back to 2wd, had to bang on the linkage to get it to go in 2wd. Drove it home to Ohio, no noises or problems.
I don't think it was fully in 4wd, rusty linkage and cable.
Afraid to try 4 wd. again, I think the transfer case might be toast.

Back in the good old days ( my age is showing again ), We would rig an old AC compressor and small pressure can under the hood just for airing up the tires after a beach run.

Mine in those days was a '61-ish Kaiser Wagoneer with the Hurricane 230 straight six OHC. The this was not good for anything above 3000 rpm, but man could she crawl!

A portable air compressor would be sufficient for after the dunes. What do you guys use for a flag mount on the renegade. I was thinking off the tow hooks?

air down ,depending on tires you can go to as low as 12 psi ,I do and did
any one who says "I aired down to 20 psi" did not air down the street pressure in my MTR's on the KJ was 28 and the TJ likes 24 ,12 on both gives a real good foot print
and I ran 12 on hard packed clay and rocks
4wd low and dont stop
if you have a stick shift dont shift ,you give up momentum
to air up get a MaxFlow compressor ,the red one works real good

TC case smoking...? That doesn't sound good... :freak3:

Try the cheapest fix first - change the fluid in the transfer case (2 qts of ATF+4 ONLY!) and probably a good idea to change the differential oils too. See if that eliminates the grinding noises. If not you may have fried the transfer case (Ugh!) or you may have bad CV joint in the front driveshaft. About $100 replacement part.

But I gotta tell ya, a smoking transfer case? :sad72:

redwings - You'll be good, if you've been up there with the quads you already know the layout. If it's your first time just take the 4 wheeler out first and then come back and get the KJ. Just be sensible, Test hill will most likely be out if you are still on stock tires, Like the others said, air down to around 13-15 psi, even on stock tires that should be good. Don't worry about airing back up, if you've been there already then you know where the offroad shop is just outside the exit on the right, if not, you can't miss it! They have an airline ran out to the curb by the trees and I think like 3-4 air chucks set up. sometimes there's a line for them, you may have to wait a truck or two but it's free! They just ask that you come in and browse the store and maybe buy just a sticker or something. I had mine up there from Toledo a couple times while it was still "fairly" stock.
