But my Jeepy only fills 16 when the gas tank is bone dry! Not when the light comes on. When the light comes on it fits about 14.

PS - If that Lib in your avatar is yours then it's nearly the same as mine ;D only mine's only a Sport trim :[ I painted the rims the graphite though.

yes..i think you are 105 correct

I don't believe the newer tanks can fill to full capacity. They used to. Us old-timers can remember filling the tank all the way full and then when the tank heated up it would seep out of the filler neck. The newer tanks are designed with an air pocket at the top to compensate for cooler fuel coming out of storage tanks in the ground and then expanding. This keeps them from overflowing when they are full. If the manufacturer is stating the capacity of the tank, including this air pocket, you will never get enough fuel in the tank to reach their stated capacity. Parking on an incline like someone has suggested may do away with some of the air pocket letting you get more fuel in, but it is best to just fill until the first "pop" of the filler handle.

I have the exact same issue, but it's not the gas tank, it's the fuel light.

The fuel light is "supposed" to go off when you have 2 gallons in the tank, "more or less". For a lot of liberty drivers, it's more, and often a lot more.

Mine goes off when I have more than five gallons in the tank. Needless to say, I'd get mine filled pretty quickly after the light goes off and sure enough, the most I'd ever get into the tank is around 16 gallons. Now that I have a scangauge, it will tell me what I really have left in the tank. And sure enough, I had an emergency where I couldn't stop for gas after the fuel light came on, and I drove something like 40 or 50 miles after the fuel light went on. When I finally was able to get gas, I got over 17 gallons in it for the first time ever. So you do have the 19.5 gallon tank, it's that your fuel light is coming on when you have over 5 gallons in the tank.

These tanks have a built in reserve, it actually says so in the owner's manual (my Ram is the same way).

No kidding, I have gone over 50 miles with the fuel light on, haven't ran out yet.
I would never do this intentionally, but it has happened.
Anyone ever notice how much longer the first half of the tank lasts, compared to the last half? I think it's a glass half empty sort of thing.

If this were Facebook...I would like this crap.

PS - Glad I'm not the only one noticing this.

My '04 build sheet says 19.5. and if you ever forget what you have you can actually refer to the gas tank itself.

This is what people plagued with high attention to detail suffer from. Noticing things like this.

Gee, I thought I was the only one who noticed that!

...oh and I have 4 gallons left when my light turns on. I usually end up putting 16 gallons in when I fill. Anymore than that and I get nervous about getting the fuel pump too hot.

4 gallons seems about right.(15.04 litres)
Jen always gets a bit paranoid when the low fuel light comes on.
And like you mentioned, more fuel is better for the fuel pump!

We keep our tank topped up and when we go off roading we always carry
an additional 14 gallons with us in one of these. (Soon too be two!)
