I WANT EVERYTHING!!!! I could start a 12V mobile restaurant! I'm going to serve pizza, soup, and coffee. That is ridiculous... ridiculously amazing! hahaha

Even a small, 6-cup coffee maker can pull 700W. That's a pure, resistive load at 100% duty cycle. I've had no trouble with a 60W (70W peak) inverter for running laptops and other electronic devices.

Any time you introduce a heating element, you've got high wattage.

I'm a little surprised you've been able to run a laptop on 60w inverter. The laptop on my desk which is no workhorse has ain input 1.5a, 120v rating on its power supply. About 180 watts. 300 watts is generally a bare minimum in this day and age if you're doing more than charging some batteries.

I have a 300 watt (800 peak) light duty I can plug into a cigarette lighter for general purpose, laptops battery charging etc.

I also have a 1500 (3000 peak) watt inverter for all of my power tools. I also run a 2 gallon air compressor off it for filling tires.

I can run pretty much every power tool I own, including the old ones I got from my dad back in the 50s when everything was encased in steel and drew 10 amps.

My opinion is that for heavy duty stuff, you need to start at 1000 watts and go up from there.

Remember though that when you get over a certain wattage, you can really burn up your battery quickly- as they're not really intended to run from a single car battery but a parallel setup with deep cycle batteries.

You can run a fairly high wattage inverter off your battery but you need to either run your engine or periodically turn it over while it's in use for high current-draw items.

Because now you've got a coffee maker that only runs on 12 volt.

I always get a kick out of some of the tech threads where some guy reworks his entire computer or some such device to run on 12 volts dc so he can put it in his car.

I'm kind of a "bam! Third wheel!" kind of guy. Just go to Target and buy the normal 115v appliance and have an inverter in the car large enough to run it. Instead of buying 100 different specialized devices, I'll buy one piece of conversion media and run it all.

I don't drink coffee, so it don't apply to me!

where do you get 125W for the acc. in the KJ?
I thought they were rated for 20A @ 12V?

I got the 125 watt from the tag on my 300 watt inverters (cig lighter) acc plug in.
In other words that relates to their warning and trying to protect you from blowing fuses I guess.
Really all inverters should have direct wiring to battery.

300w Doesn't Like notebook

Well bad news on the 300 watt inverter. Plugged into accessory or direct to battery, the 17" notebook refuses to cooperate or charge properly.
I guess the sine wave on this is:pp:
I also bought a cheapo 75 watt direct plug in accessory one that worked for 5 minutes and then crapped the notebook out. So I guess the notebook is probably drawing around 100watts , but at least it initially worked.
So tomorrow both go back to crappy tire, and am going to try this 180 watt direct plug in inverter and try that with notebook. Will post back results.

This Inverter Powers Notebook!

So finally one that works to power the notebook properly.
Was surprised when I plugged it in that it has a fan built in. (made by GE)
Nice fuse too!

I tried it in both vehicles while engine running/off, unplugging & reconnect no glitches what so ever!
2 of the other Inverters would not power Notebook correctly.

In the KJ it was a tight fit as low to console, but this one is great! :happy107:

If the 1000 watt continuous- pure sine ever goes on sale, I am going to get one of these.

I have plans to build a small box to make my inverter setup portable. For now I simply jumper it to the battery.

Note that the higher the output of the inverter the larger the gauge of wiring.

2 Port Accessory Adapter

So I can run the dash light and inverter, thought I would try a new 2 port.
With a 10 foot extension.

The 2 port right side did not work for light so had to move it to left before it cooked itself.
The extension does not overheat but the 2 port sure did & is now dead.
May have got a defective one, will have to try another one tomorrow.
It looked cool when it was working though.

The above 2 way splitter was rated at only 5 amps.
Problem with these they are made for small devices like cell phone loads. Hard to find any heavy duty.
Going to try this one, possibly 10amp fuse in this one.

That setup is a 1,500 watt inverter rated for 1,200 watts continuous. To operate it I jumpered it to my Liberty's battery while it was running. However the jumper cables were too small of a gauge and I had to add a second set. I'm going to have to get some lengths of welding cable.

I suppose the ideal setup would be to run it off of two batteries with the engine off.

LF That is almost at the point where a portable generator makes more sense.
I am having enough problems just getting the notebook charged LOL.
I went looking online and found that most of the 3 way splitters with a metal end, have a 10 Amp fuse. I think the two way that fried was because my inverter was pulling more than 5 amps. and was plastic with only a metal tip.
So lets hope this new 3 way one works! Will edit in a response later, after I get some time to try the notebook with the new 3 way splitter and 10 feet of extension wire.

LOL, yes you do have a point. I was even pondering the idea of running a deep fat fryer off of my inverter. :happy175:

I do know a fellow with an even bigger inverter, powerful enough to run power tools (i.e.: impact wrench).

Don't forget to bake a pie for desert........:smokin:

And tell that guy with the bigger inverter that they make cordless power tools now........:happy175:

Ah A Working Charging Inverter!

The new 3 way 10 amp splitter works perfectly does not overheat and noticed it has one insulated socket. http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/VehicleAccessories/Plugin12VoltAccessories/PRD~0374458P/Three-outlet%252B12V%252BPower%252BAdaptor.jsp?locale=en

It does not overheat at all. Finally a well made product that can handle the inverter and 10' extension. Done deal.
No I wont be baking with this set up. But I can power 10 feet away the notebook and charge batteries and stuff up to 90 watt draw.
