front drive shaft boot "not serviceable?"

Howdy.
I spend alot of time under my 2004 KJ 3.7L 4x4, looking for leaks and such. I found some red fluid dripping from the area under the transmission. I have recently changed the trans fluid and filter, and the pan is not at all leaking, and has not been. As a matter of fact, I was under the Jeep about 3,000 miles ago changing the oil and did not see this leak / fluid at all.
Trying to keep this a short story, I noticed that the boot around the front axel where it enters the transfer case is gone. I can see the band that still holds a strip of rubber under it, which is all that is left of the boot. I figure the red fluid is from my transfer case, the transmission does not apear to be leaking. (on my second transmission now) Also there is a greesy ring where the boot was on the walls under the jeep.
Last year I noticed some seepage / wetness around the area where the front axel enters the front differential. I was told that is was not a huge problem, and we would worry about it later. So I figure now is a good time to take the Jeep into the mechanic, and have it all fixed, right, stop me if I'm not making sense please...
Mechanic tells me he cleaned it all up and cannot detect the leaks. I did clean up the area under the trans, but not under the front diff. He is going to put some miles on it wednesday morning to see if he can find what I saw. Also, he tells me that the front boot is "not serviceable".
QUESTIONS:
- what will happen if I drive around with no boot? I believe that this is where the transfer case fluid is leaking from.
- how is it not serviceable? Can it be replaced if needed?
- is the seapage in the front under the diff an issue. It has never worked it's way into a drip, just wet all the time.
- Do I get a second opinion? I only trust one other mechanic that is 50 miles away.
Please help me with your input.

Thanks, I see that a new cv joint kit is 75$ with new boot. Maybe he is trying to tell me that it's not as simple as replacing the boot? I'll find out more tomorrow

More than likely if the joint has been without a boot there has been damage to the joint itself but you can get the new joint and boot and just replace what is damaged. According to Chrysler the part isn't serviceable and they don't sell separate parts for it, only the whole assembly. That is probably where he was getting his information. Just went through getting mine replaced under the 7/70 power-train warranty. $500 part for the $100 deductible. Can't beat that! Plus I got a whole new front drive shaft that just needed paint as they ship bare steel. Hope you get your drive shaft issues taken care of.
