I am looking at gettting a bike rack that fit my jeep. I would prefer a hitch one that would work without removing the spare tire. A roof one would not be bad either.

P.S. Happy 4th of July weekend

The "Hollywood Racks SR1 Spare Tire Rack", is a pretty well engineered user friendly rack. Go to Amazon.com , ~$119 w/ free shipping. If you go with a hitch mount, you will need an extra, extra long draw bar/ball mount to clear the spare. I think etrailer may have those.

ive seen ones that latch onto the spare tire itself, those hitch ones scare me with how much they wobble when loaded down

I use a Rhode brand carrier. it straps right onto the spare tire, no screws or bolts. goes on and off real fast. use it every weekend.

I use one that straps to the spare
Not sure on the brand
I do know it fit with a 245/75 as well as a 32 X 11.5
but could squeeze it onto a 33
no issues with the KJ or TJ after 2+ years
And 1000's of miles some onnot so great roads

I have one of those, once you install it, there it is easy to use, and no wobbling, at least with mine and just 2 bikes

Dont need it. 3 Mountain bikes with tires, plus 3 people will fit in a 02-07 Liberty.

Yeah I can fit three people plus three bikes in mine too, but I would prefer getting a rack for longer trips. How much does one of the over tire one cost. Any suggestion on brands?

not sure how much or what type I got (been 6+ years since I bought it)
my model looks like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170448752209&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXI7&GUID=9cbe41d51290a0aad385dd25fe45a324&itemid=170448752209&ff4=263602_263622
just with out the cobra letters, but one lock for both bikes, only one hint, don't over tighten the lock mechanism on the top, can be a pain to get off if over tightened

but so search for "spare tire mounted bike rack" in goggle and it should give you some options

the main mount for the bike rake fits under the spare tire on the the lugs that stick out of the rear gate, and it comes out from the the center of the tire, you can put a tire cover over it if you wish (slightly pushes out on the center of the cover), i had one on for a while,

The Thule version is called "Spare me" and is somewhat expensive new. I found mine on Craigslist for $50. It holds two bikes securely, and also acts as a lock on your spare so nobody can steal it!

If you are cheap like me, you can get this one from Harbor Freight. Plus you can use a 20% off coupon to bring the price down to about $25.

http://www.harborfreight.com/two-bike-hitch-mount-bike-rack-98019.html

You will also need to use a hitch extension from Harbor Freight to clear the spare tire. The hitch is pretty well made, and has a pin release so that it tilts to allow the hatch to be opened.

How much extra weight are we comfortable with dangling from the spare tire? I've already got the BFG 245/75 back there and it's enough extra that I have to grab onto the tailgate and keep it from banging against the stops and bending the hinges (or worse).

So assuming at least that you would not open the gate while the bikes were on the rack? 'Cause I'd llike to get something like that - let the kids bring their bikes to camp.

That's the reason I went with a hitch mounted rack. The spare tire seems like its too much weight for the tailgate now.

I know that this is an older thread that I started, but I am looking into getting the bike rack within the next couple weeks. I go a co-op for the summer and fall and will be traveling alot so I need a bike rack. I like the idea of a hitch mounted bike rack. Is there a certain rack that would work good. I would like a rack that can hold at least 2 bikes.
