I have an 03 liberty limited with the 242 select trac and i have been hearing a grinding and squueking while in 4wd part or full don't matter I thought it was the clutches in the front diff but now I am also hearing it in 2wd so I was thinking something in the tcase need help this is my only vehicle :favorites68:

First of all, breathe.

Secondly...it could still be the front diff as the diff spins no matter what. The only thing the transfer case does is remove power from the drivetrain. We do not have locking hubs.

Have you checked the fluid in the front diff to see what it looks like? Have you pulled the front driveshaft to see if the squeaking/grinding stops?

I'd start with those two, namely, remove the front driveshaft. It can be a little bit of a pain.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Check the front driveshaft, the CV boot on the t-case side likes to crack and then spits all the grease out.Makes a nice sound when dry like your discribing.Does it in 4wd but if bad enough can make the noise in 2wd also.

Oh and no clutches in the front diff.

No, because like I said - if the KJ is on 3 or more wheels and moving, the front axle is spinning. The transfer case just couples/decouples the front axle/driveshaft from the powertrain.

So, 4 wheels on the ground and the KJ is rolling...the front driveshaft is spinning.

Test it yourself - put it in 2wd. Put the front end on jackstands. Spin both front wheels the same way and watch the front driveshaft. ;)

Techinically since the t-case is sealed system you juat about can run any ATF,older vehicles with the 231 say DEXIII or ATF+2.Sure ATF+4 is stated but not 100% required in your t-case.Heck running 5w-20/30 motor oil is okay also.
