Our 05 CRD engine cracked a week ago Saturday with 131,000 miles on it. Just had an EGR valve replaced and a turbo hose replaced, but I don't think the 2 are related. Dealer estimated $7300 to replace with a rebuilt (5000 parts + labor).

mine had a cracked head. found out about it after going through 3 heater plugs in less then 3 months.

i don't think it is realted with those replacements. when they did mine, they told me it could be due to very cold starts in the morning or frequent on/off in the cold.

i cannot say much about the cost because the whole price structure is different over here

Not really helpful here in the states. I don't think I could get an engine from the UK cheaper. We bought a new vehicle. Not sure if I want to take the risk of replacing what I now feel is an inferior engine. Just wanted to know how many other people had this problem.

Inferior engine

I don't think V.M. qualifies as an inferior engine. They have a long and reputible history of some of the most proficient engines the world has ever seen. The rare instance of one blowing or cracking is just that rare and happens industry wide with any manufacturer. Frito Lay ran the Cummins 4BT for years but are going to a new model and getting rid of all the old ones at auctioin. Just read the posts for www.godovebid.com and see all the blown 4BT's. Does that mean it was inferior? Not a chance. It's all about the driver JMO:Bye:

You know what, I think all the modern diesels they are putting in light trucks and cars now a days are inferior, right along with the gassers. More aluminum makes them more inferior. Not to mention all the emission controls that screws thing up.

with 81,000 miles I noticed my '06 CRD loosing a lot of oil. inspection found a crack in the engine block about 4 inches long. above the oil pan and just in from the flange where the transmission mounts. Never been overheated. Mostly easy highway miles. Always used the Mobil 0W-40 oil changed early. Crack looks like a thin place in the casting. Just wasn't cast well. I hope to have the crack repaired properly and sell the engine for half price for the used one I put in. I replaced it with a used one with about the same miles. Cost $5000 for engine and $2,500 for the water pump, idler pulley, and other parts and labor.

Don't know anything about these engines but a good welder could probably weld it if it isn't interfering with other aspects of the engine functioning .
