Got a little issue here and I'm not sure what's going on. About every other week I check my engine oil, and untill recently it was always up to the top of the safe mark on my dipstick. A couple of days ago, I did another check, but this time it was about 3/4 of an inch above the top of the safe mark. Double checked it today and it was the same. I don't get how the oil level has gone up because I haven't added any oil.

Does anybody have any ideas why this would happen?

If your engine is hot when you check your oil, the oil expands (as do all liquids when heated) and will show high.

Also, if the jeep is parked even slightly uphill, oil will show higher than it really is, parked downhill is reverse.

Any possibility of those conditions?

This is all my fault I got everyone checking their dipsticks...LOL.
Hot-On level surface after engine off for 5 minutes check it.
It should be at the same spot when cold overnight. It was on mine.
5 quarts after a proper drain goes in with the filter.
If it suddenly is 3/4 inch high then...

It's showing up the same level hot (5 mins after) and cold. I am also checking it on a flat surface. Yes LibertyTC something goofy is going on here! I just hope my engines not gona blow.

Could someone have added some oil to it at a shop center or something?
Maybe one of the oil galleries cleared up using the synthetic and more drained down now?
Just drain some out, bring it back to just above the fill line, and monitor it daily.
Best-o-luck!
Keep us posted..

Good luck draining "some" out! Once the drain plug is removed, it will drain fast and trying to put the plug back in will make a nice mess.

If you loosen but don't remove the drain plug oil will leak past the threads and you can control the flow that way.

If the oil on the dip stick is kinda milky looking, you might be getting coolant into the oil (bad head gasket...., or ???) Just a thought - hope not - lol.

How long is your normal commute? I've read that if you don't get the engine temps up high enough, you actually can increase the volume of fluid by getting unburnt fuel and moisture in the oil. A good 20-30min drive gets the oil hot enough to burn/evaporate those contaminants off, so if you just drive short 10-15 minutes hops everywhere, try taking the Jeep out for a long drive and then check your oil.

Even though I really hope this ain't the case, excessive pistons blow-by? This would increase the amount of lubricant ( by adding fuel to it, thus making it thinner) fix-up wouldn't be cheap I guess... and probably would cause emission issues as well. But again, just a thought.... I'm sure I'm wrong !!!
Does oil smell of gasoline, I mean, more than usual? This might not be the case anyway, I assume this happens only to high mileage engines and usually, not all at once.

I would imagine it is just because its not on level ground. Or it wasn't on level ground last time you added oil to it? If you need to get some oil out it might be easier to take the oil filter off and empty the oil filter and then start it back up again till the oil light goes out so you know it has oil pressure. Then let it settle and check oil level again and then if it needs any more taking out, just repeat the oil filter emptying. Not as messy and more controllable. Especially if you drop the bung!! Hehe. :smokin:
