Can any one maybe shed some light on a problem I have with my 2002 KJ 2.5 CRD. For some reason the ABS does not work but no warning light comes on. I only found out that it's not working when I had to make an emergancy stop and the brakes locked up. Went testing it on the gravel and all four locked up without any abs action on the wheels or on the brake pedal. What could it be?

I presume you have the Ltd model....that was the only model in 2002 that had ABS? I have the 2002 Sport model, unfortunately without ABS.
There are some relays and fuses specific to ABS, check your fuse box in the cab and especially in the engine bay..maybe a fuse or relay gone bad.
Also, it is not unusual for brakes to lock up on loose gravel...even with ABS...depends on the conditions and your type of tire!

I also have the sport model, but when starting, on the dash the abs check light comes on with all the other lights and then goes off with all the other lights. Would that be there if it did not have abs?

How would I know if I did not have abs to start with?

Check the fuse panel in front of the battery, on my Sport there is no fuse 4 "ABS Pump" or fuse 25 "ABS Valve"...unfortunately just fitting fuses in these positions is not going to give me ABS:disgust:
I checked on my display when turning on the ignition,ABS light does not come on but these lights are turned on by the PCI bus and sometimes work funny; my "Front foglight" LED comes on the display as soon as I turn my normal lights on...I dont have front fog lamps installed and I cannot get this LED to turn off no matter what I do to the twisting/pulling light switch.

Definitely when I got my 2002 2.5 CRD Sport in May 2002, ABS was not fitted...only available on the LTD model. I do not know where the ABS Pump is fitted on these 2002 models...maybe someone here can help out and you can see if you have one fitted but I personaly doubt that you ever had ABS in the first place unless a slightly newer Sport model may have had it fitted:shrug:

Edit to add: If you go to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section on this forum, topic "Build Sheet" there is a discussion on how to get the complete breakdown on your vehicle by means of the VIN number. I did see on some other forum a direct link to a site whereby you could enter your VIN number and get the information but I cannot find that link now:shrug:

Another way is put the key in the ignition to the ACC position, and see if the ABS light comes on...and if it doesn't, then you don't have ABS. That's how I checked mine...and fortunately, I don't have it!

Yeah it depends what you are using your Jeep to do most of the time!
In my case I spend 98% of my time on freeways and the rest on mild dirt!
So in my case I have fitted good all weather Michelin road tires (tyres in USA) on my KJ. Under these circum standers I would prefer to have had ABS for wet-road stopping. But definitely on soft sand roads...non ABS tends to build up a neat block of sand in front of the tires which helps in stopping whereas ABS tries to stop/start the wheels and actualy has less stopping power on loose dirt!

he already said the check light comes on at startup.

One thing to remember is ABS operates on detecting different wheel speeds between wheels. Do you have an ABS light on during normal operation? Has it ever come on while just driving?

To see if you have an ABS pump, look on the left hand side in the engine bay, beside the Aircon evap cansiter, there you'll see all the brake lines. If you have ABS there will be a big motor there and you'll see all the brake line in and out of it. If you only see a metal block with brake lines in and out.... NO ABS.

My 2002 CRD doesnt have it either.
