Ok, so I had the compressor replaced about a month ago and all has been well. However, last weekend, I heard a click from the dash and now Recirc does not work. When it is engaged, it almost sounds as though there is something in the vent blocking airflow. It also sounds like it is just cooling behind the dash. My inital thought is that a piece of tape or something came loose and is now an obstruction. However, we can not figure out where the recirc draws the air from or how to access the ducting. Any help would be appreciated.

A blend door broke or a actuator broke. All that stuff is vacuum operated and is contained in the HVAC box behind the dash, not fun to work on.

Oh great. Looks like I'll be going without recirc for awhile....

When you do get to fixing it let us know how it worked out and where the problem was. I read about this in a few other places online. The Durango suffers from this also, we were looking at a couple before buying the KJ and i always research a vehicle online first, seems they have blend door problems and its a HUGE job getting into the dash to fix it, they also suffer from leaking evaporators which causes you to remove the entire dash.

Hmm, memories of reading about those WJ blend door problems! They perfected the easiest and best fix for those though.

Just curious, what was the best fix for those? Any links? I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I'm looking at as far as repairs....

From what i read, and what mechanics that i know i can trust told me, the 1999-2001 Durango's were horrible with this problem. If you got a good one and it didn't break in a few years or the evaporator didn't leak you were alright, but otherwise its a job that takes a full day or more to replace the evaporator, saw one being torn apart for it, WOW, they had the whole dash out on the shop floor, even the steering column was loosened and the steering wheel removed to give clearance to remove the dash.

What i was told is if you have one of these model years and your evaporator needs replacing to make sure you get a new one not a reman, or make sure you get one from a 2002 model year in the junk yard, supposedly they redesigned it slightly starting in 2002.

Oh, and not to stay off topic here but this does technically relate to any vehicle, however if you have a Durango though make damn sure your evap drain is clear and not building water in the bottom of the airbox as i helps speed up the failure rate.

I surfed through websites and forums before buying the KJ, and after reading stuff here and stuff on Durango forums i finally settled on buying a KJ.

I discovered the actual culprit. The piece of plastic trim under the dash had come loose and a receipt with the date that it stopped working had gotten in there and must have been interfering with it somehow. Just a heads up to people to take a look before paying the $800 Jeep dealerships claim to replace blend doors.

Nice find. Oh, and irony on the receipt? I'm never sure.
