I can not for the life of me get the trans canister filter out. Any suggestions. Mind you I have no way of getting a hold of a filter wrench or a filter socket. Thanks in advance.

Thank you all. I did get it undone eventually but I almost broke my arm doing it. Seriously I would love to see the guy at the Chrysler factory who muscled that one on. Im no little guy and seriously it took some force to undo.

That my friends is ATF+4 with only 130,000 miles on it. And how did I know it was all 130,565 miles. Well lets just say the machine applied RVT and original Chrysler filters gave it away. I guess its a good thing I changed it huh?

Wait, your saying it went 130k with no changes?

However, thats not as bad as you might think... Let me explain. All the dealers around here don't drop the pan anymore, they hook up their machine at the front trans cooler lines and back flush the trans and filters, they don't drop the pan and replace the filters, they just flush the system out.

So its entirely possible it has been done, but the filters weren't changed. I thought it was weird, but the one shop told me they don't do the filters unless requested.

You can not back flush a trans.

If one more moron that uses that equipment spews the "IT BACKFLUSHES THE FILTER" ******** one more time ThunderbirdJunkie is going to scream and then lob a u-joint through his noggin.

It's absolute ******** and impossible, since most flush machines use the line pressure from the transmission.

I KNOW THAT...

I was simply stating to the OP that the fluid MAY HAVE been changed by a dealer that does that stupid flush bull and doesnt drop the pan.

The Dodge dealership near me doesn't, i know one of the mechanics there since high school, that makes me feel old now but anyway, he said they haven't dropped a pan now in FIVE YEARS...

Service Manager doesn't allow it unless the customer specifically requests it. So FYI to those that go in for a flush.

I would have thought that within the 130k of mileage that the dealership would have replaced the filter at least once. The last time I had my transmission serviced at the dealership they replaced the fluid & filter and flushed the transmission. A surprisingly expensive bill but at the time I felt it was worth it.

I don't mean to hi-jack your thread but I find it odd that when I change my diff fluid that I pull the diff covers off and wipe out the interior and inspect the interior for particles and unusual wear on the gears however the dealership seems satisfied with sticking a hose in the fill plug and pumping out the old, pump in the new. Is it a matter of expediency for the dealership mechanics?
must be...

Yeah I don't know the full maintenance of the vehicle but I bought it from a couple who I probably could have sold blinker fluid to. I really don't think the fluid had ever been changed.

It could be that the lower square plastic filter had been changed before since it has a more frequent change interval than the cannister.

Yeah dealerships are all about speed...

They do the rear diff that way around here too, they have this extraction machine as its called, the put the hose down in and suck out the oil and then pump fresh back in. Imagine all the sludge building up on the bottom??

I just pulled my rear diff cover this weekend, and also drained and refilled the front.

Mangate is also right on that, could be they changed the square filter and not the second return line filter. Dumb but possible. Even though it looks like the pan hasn't been off they could have just done a good job with the RTV so that it looked like it hadn't.
