Looking at getting recovery gear and other basic essentials. Nothing crazy since I really don't off road as much as or as hard as a lot of you do, but I know I need at least recovery gear and probably a CB.

Any other little items you guys think I should also look at getting? And, any info you can give me on what functions the CB should have as well as what to look out for for good quality straps?

(Lift, tires, and lockers do not count as LITTLE items BTW :p)

Tow hooks at a minimum and skid plates.

Tow straps without hooks on them. Get some that have loops in the end. Those hooks can end up being deadly projectiles.

Yeah, I've been reading that the metal clips are a no go.

I've got both front and rear hooks as well as skids - all of the ones that come stock with the Renegade, anyways. I probably should've mentioned that :p

Pick up a recovery strap not a tow strap, there is a difference. And if wheeling alone toss in a come-along. It's not as good as a winch but it's better than nothing. If your Libby is lifted and you only have the stock scissors jack you'll need a block of wood to put underneath it.

I've started putting a can of fly spray in my kit and should throw in a bottle of sunscreen too. So often I forget to pack both. A small folding camp saw is useful to clear brush from the trail or to cut wood for a camp fire.

If you have the room you can pack extra fluids like power steering or brake.

I usually bring a shovel, axe, gloves, BFH, oil, oil filter, flashlight, socket set....and the strap...

I also have Just-in-case bag. Includes a First Aid kit, fix a flat, road flares, and jumper cables.

I did not know that about tow straps with hooks.
I actually use 5/8" nylon rope, have one with hooks and one with loops spliced on the ends. The nylon rope has a lot of stretch and give to it, and has worked well on the beach pulling others out of the soft sand......

what you need
-strap with loop ends
-assorted hand tools ,figure 1 of the 100pc sets from sears has most every thing
-LED flash light ,the old school bulb type tend to never hold up even Mag's
-a gallon jug of drinking water ,you can use this in the Jeep but you can not drink coolant
-jumper cables
-some 2X6X10" lumber for the oe jack
-some one else

what is nice to have
-air source
-ax ,small hatchet that could also be used for a hammer
-CB ,but the some one else would also need one
-GPS ,not a Garmin unless it has some kind of mode that acts like the cheeper ones that keep track of places you have been for hiking and fishing
-towel and clean cloths and a blanket depending on how "back country" you plan to go
-bug spray

Just think about where you are going and what you are doing
most of the wheelin that I do is on private property ,with permission
or at public parks and I am always with at least 4+ other Jeeps
we dont all have the same Junk ,I carry lots of tools and CO2 with impact ,cutoff tool and ratchet so others will tend to carry less tools
on the other hand my first aid kit is liquid benedryl ,electric tape and paper towles

Don't forget tools, spare fluids, tire repair kit, clamps, duct tap, zip ties and a can of starter fluid and a BBQ lighter to reset a blown bead on your tire, a GPS with topo maps for your area, and the list goes on.....

AlexKJ, I thought your poncho was a Snuggie haha. I was like WTF do I need a Snuggie for!?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll look into getting the most common sense stuff soon. Straps, shovel, first aid, etc.

I think I want to find a cargo shelf too so that it can all be neatly tucked away without begging to be stolen.
