Problem with AC????

Everything back together no noise . Was most likely the bearing in the ac pulley but we also replaced the clutch to and everything is working fine.

so how hard/easy was it?
Those instructions worked?
My A/C started making all kinds of noise today and smells burnt..would that be the clutch? Still cools and all but noisy as hell whether it's on or off.

also, would I be better off getting a used one from the scrap yard if they're cheap? Local yard has 4 KJs in stock, even if a used one last only a year.....if it's cheap I don't care.

All,

my A/C Clutch went last summer, since it was towards the end I never bothered to replace it. But summer is around the corner and we hit 92 here yesterday and no A/C SUCKED! Now my question is, I heard that there is a "newer" A/C compressor out there compared to a direct replacement for our stock ones. Is this true? And if it is, anyone know where I could order mine?

mine just started making funny noises yesterday and smells like burnt peanut oil. the noise it makes sounds like metal rollers continuously rolling

Hmm, is it just me or has there been a rash of AC clutches going out lately? Great, I'd better sit down with my wallet and have "the talk".

As for the rash of AC problems it is that time of the year that people start complaining about there AC.A automotive AC system is very fragile and is failure prone.To do it right will cost you big $$$$.


Guess I'm about the only one that has a 100% functional AC system(has been for 8+ years) but wish I did not have it as I rarely never use it.The only time it get's used is when I use defrost in the winter time.

Mine's still 100% functional too. (over 5 years/85,000 miles). And here in Seattle, only gets used during the summer months (of which there are only 1).

It's just when I see a rash of similarly-miled KJ's having similar problems, I begin to wonder if I'm not far off.

I've been **** about the up keep of our KJ.
As far as the A/C?

Vehicle components wear out...
That's how it goes with any vehicle.
For us, it's time to have the A/C system repaired/replaced.
Such is life.

Once it's been taken care of, we will have cold air when we want/need it.

That's the cost of owning and maintaining a vehicle.

Agreed 100%. That's why I belong to these forums. So if I see a dozen messages about 'part x' breaking at around 100k miles, I can be prepared for what I'm going to be doing in the next six months. It actually helps to take the surprise out of it.

jnaut doesn't like surprises. Especially when it comes to parts on his vehicle.

you were right. &*^& thing locked up on me this morning. i was able to get the pulley off and figured out a new route for a shorter serpentine belt to bypass it without having to buy the bypass pulley kit and every pulley rotates the correct direction...i will post a picture.

yes. only deal is you have to get the AC pulley out. without a gear puller or harmonic pulley puller it is a pain in the ****. I found decent instructions at this link (with pictures):

then with the 82.5" 6-rib belt you route straight from the tensioner pulley to the alternator then to the water pump, from the water pump to the power steering pump, from the power steering pump to the crank, crank to idler pulley, idler to tensioner pulley. if you can't find an 82.5" belt i think up to a 83.5 inch length would work as well because my tensioner puller is at about 75%. the belt will stretch though.

How the heck do you post a picture you have saved to your computer???

I guess since most (and in cold country) only use a/c at certain times only doesnt keep things lubed up..so now making the compressor come on like on bi level funtion or others depending on make..basically to keep everthing lubed up...does our KJ do this too? if not I heard u should at lease turn on your air for 10mins once a week to keep everthing in working order...

You kind of can. It's generally recommended that you run any ac system 10 minutes a month or so, to keep the seals working. If they don't run often enough, the seals dry out and start leaking.

Other than that, not much more you can do.

Yes, KJ runs compressor in defog mode.

Correct,as the R134A molecules are half the size of R12's it's going to leak out no matter what you do and low refrigerant means no lubricant is being moved and no lubricant movement equals compressor failure.The advent of cycling clutches on the compressor also means early failure of that part as a clutch is a wear item and cycling it often just adds to the wear. To some manufacturers it is acceptable to lose up to 1lbs of R134A a year and considered to not have a leak.

Your AC compressor runs more then 10mins a month unless you never turn on your HVAC system at all.
