Hey everybody just wondering what a good oil filter deal is? I'm getting tired of paying the $14 for a Mobil 1 Filter so I'm looking to get something else the next time around. No Frams!

Another vote for the NAPA/Wix filter. Picked one up a couple of weeks ago for right around $7 after tax. Better quality than (cough) Fram (cough) and better price than Mobil 1.

I picked up four mobil 1 filters and a crapton of oil once when they had a special for a filter and 5 quarts for like 26 bucks. The pain in the butt thing is that it was 1 qt bottles. Kind of hard to carry the old oil in them without really making a mess...I like the 5gallon ones...

Wally World has the Motorcraft to fit ours for like $3. It is a highly rated filter. I grab wix when O'Reilly has them on sale, though.

Problem is these things change over the years. I'm guessing when you were a kid they weren't walmart's main filter line. Basically the rule of thumb for me is that if it is sold at walmart as their main product line, expect that it had every nickel of high quality material and solid manufacturing process removed from it. All that matters is price. I do buy my oil there, as Mobil 1 is $23 for 5 quarts. The difference is that all oils are basically sold there, nobody got an exclusive contract by chopping their quality (and cost) to crap.

Personally, price is the last consideration for me when keeping my vehicles running well. It is definitely a factor, but I use price to differentiate between what I consider to be the highest quality parts, fluid, filters, etc. Usually I pick a product and then use cost to help determine where I buy it. Unfortunately most auto parts stores are just as bad as walmart about just having the cheapest crap possible in stock. Mainly due to customer demand.

I just want to cringe when in a parts store and I hear "give me the cheapest xxxx you got". C'mon, the difference between mobil 1 filter & oil, and el cheapo, is about 15 bucks. If changed every 3000 miles, thats 1/2 cent per mile. So for every gallon of gas you put in for $3, you spend about 7-10 cents in oil & filter. In the grand scheme of expenses for your vehicle, lubricants should be the last place you skimp.

WalMart here doesn't carry anything but SuperTech and Fram when it comes to filters, no other choices.

I don't always buy from Wal-Mart, sometimes i buy from the local auto parts store, or Advance, they all carry Fram as well. But i pretty much always buy the oil from Wal-Mart, they carry the 5 quart jugs of Castrol GTX for about $4 cheaper than anyone else, and thats the only type of oil i use anymore after seeing the difference it makes sludge and crud wise. But i have explained that before so i wont again unless someone wants to know my reason again.

Other than Fram my only choice is to drive.... I have to drive a half hour just to get HOAT coolant, the nearest Napa. Advance is nearly an hour away. I just don't have a lot of choices. And the closest auto parts store i have is a Sturdevant's in town which only sells their house brand filters, an oil filter for the KJ will set you back $9.50, and i don't even know what the heck it honestly is!! Its just your average looking oil filter painted with their colors, i don't have any idea who makes it. Used to be able to get WIX and Fram, and a few others there then the store got taken over by new management and he dropped them all... Why? Because carrying the house brand means less cost and more profit to him. Used to have Optima batteries right there in store, now you have to special order them and pay another $15 for the priviledge.

I realize the filters have changed over the years, but i have been using Fram air and oil filters for nearly 20 years now without a single issue, thats a lot of vehicles owned and a lot of oil changes. And all the vehicles i have owned went well over 100k, a few over 200k.

It's more complicated than that, though. For most people, it comes down to "Will it do the same job as the more expensive stuff?" or more accurately, "Will it really make a difference if I use Penzoil as opposed to the Full Synthetic".

When the results aren't dramatically clear, people are going to opt for the cheaper solution.

And the problem is, the differences aren't dramatically clear, you're just playing odds. There are plenty of people out there who got 285,000 miles out of an engine who never used anything but dino oil and fram filters. So naturally, it becomes attractive to try to save some money.

It all comes down to the almighty dollar.. Not many of us make $50-75k a year ya know... I know i don't. LOL

I've seen this trend also, and sometimes i will agree to save, but when it comes to some basic things like oil and filter i won't buy anything other than what i have used for years and years..

When it comes down to a part and i can get a reman unit for $50 less than a new then i will go reman, but most of the time the difference isn't that great. The last water pump replacement i did on a minivan it was only a $20 difference so i went with new.
