I found this posted on the Chrysler site today. The release date on the recall is 4/2010. Here is some of what is on the recall notice-

2002 - 2003 (KJ) Jeep® Liberty
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles built from May 1, 2002
through September 30, 2002 (MDH 050100 through 093023).
IMPORTANT: Only the above vehicles sold or currently registered in “salt belt”
states (where large amounts of road salt are used for snow and ice removal) are
involved. See “Owner Notification and Service Scheduling” section for a list of
salt belt states.
The front suspension upper control arm ball joints on about 42,000 of the above
vehicles may experience a loss of lubricant that can lead to corrosion, accelerated
wear, and possibly separation while driving. A separated upper ball joint while
driving could cause a crash without warning.
The front suspension right and left side upper control arms must be replaced.

Supposedly Chrysler is going to start the repairs on or about April 24 of this year (even though they identified the issue last year, which is confusing in itself).

If the campaign number or specific states for the recall are needed, a thread had already been started on this last week and is on the second page of this section (or click here if you're lazy like me: http://www.jeepkjcountry.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44366). I just don't feel like copying and pasting the whole thing :D.

So...even though we know about it now, we can't get it repaired until after the 24th? First one that's actually included my specific Jeepie...but hey, new ball joints ftw.

I have an appt. for tomorrow at noon to have my UCA's replaced under the recall. I had heard about the 24th, but when I called a local stealership and mentioned the recall, all he said was "when can you bring it in?" So I would just call your local stealership and see what they say.

Cool, I'll have to do that. I was waiting until the 24th because of what the campaign announcement said.

BTW, daddy says Semper Fi. He was a grunt 2/4 in Desert Storm.

How can I find out where my libby was originally sold...Buy a carfax? I am the 3rd or 4th owner I think.

I don't know about finding out where it was sold, but if you go to the "For Owners" link on Jeep.com you can put the VIN number in and see if the recall applies to your vehicle...then you could know it was at least originally sold in salt belt state =P Might be something on the sticker with the vehicle manufacturing information that's on the inside of the driver's side door. (dunno)

and if you call the hotline (1-800-424-9153), and give them your vin, you can ask them when the previous recall work was done, and they can even look up where the work was performed

I just did it because I couldn't rember getting the lower ball joints recall done, but it wasn't showing up on the website as open, so I gave them a call and they looked it up, then I found out then my wife must have taken the jeep in when I was away in 2006

I did exactly the same thing, my appointment is for Thursday. For once they were nice about helping out.

Man I have the wrong build date. No lifetime suspension repairs for my KJ. What a bummer.

So prior to this recall when I entered the VIN of my KJ into the Jeep website, nothing came up in the search results--does this mean that everything was taken care of in regards to recalls, or that there were no recalls that affected it prior to this one? Just curious...

What's with the Spaniard takeover going on here?! :p j/k

BTW: To find out the information about your KJ, where purchased, original owners, etc.... ask the Dealership for a VIP Report.

Thanks for the info. The .com worked (the 800 number was busy forever) I got good news and bad.

(Good News) My libby was one of the chosen ones, I am very happy as this was going to be my next fix as they are torn up.

(Bad News) My libby will be the first the dealer will do, since Florida is not one of the states, no one has called (in my area) They said they will do it this Saturday, but will take them 3-4 hours as it is the first and they want to make sure they know what to do.....Hmmmmm..Should that concern me?

Sorry to hear that. Anybody that works in a CDJ dealership and repairs vehicle for a living shouldn't take 3-4 hours to complete this repair. If they do, they need to find a new career. The warranty time is 1.7hrs. You can do them in about an hour and a half easy.

I should have posted this earlier. This was also in the recall notice. Sorry, but I overlooked it.

Only vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the following states are
involved in this notification.
Connecticut Massachusetts Pennsylvania
Delaware Michigan Rhode Island
Illinois Minnesota Vermont
Indiana Missouri Virginia
Iowa New Hampshire Washington, DC
Kentucky New Jersey West Virginia
Maine New York Wisconsin
Maryland Ohio

They told me it calls for 1.7 hrs of work, But they then proceeded to tell me maybe 3-4 hours as it is the first one. I would agree that is too long, maybe they are just covering their a$$ so I will not wait for it.

I dropped mine off yesterday about noon, I was told it would take about 3-4 hrs. I got a call around 4pm and he said "um ya we're not gonna be able to finish it today so we will have to keep it overnight." I say "WTF? You've got to be kidding me?" He says "well since yours is the first to come in for the recall, we didn't know how involved it was going to be. Plus since your jeep is 8 yrs old we're having a hard time getting the bolts loose." Needless to say I was pissed! How can you be a dealer service center and not know what is involed in replacing UCA's!! So anyway I got a call about 9:30am telling me it was ready. It's a good thing I wasn't paying for it, and it wasn't too much of an inconvenience for me, or heads would have rolled!

This. ThunderbirdJunkie worked at a CDJ dealer in Memphis, quit in '06, never did do a KJ UBJ, but anybody that can't figure out how to do it in under 2 hours needs to have their head examined...HOWEVER...and don't take this the wrong way RenegadeMarine, but...
I'm angry because my 100% free service that in many peoples' opinions should not be free in the first place on my eight year old vehicle took longer than anticipated

First off - you live in MI. The land of rust. Imagine how hard it was for ThunderbirdJunkie to find a CJ7 frame that wasn't rotted through within a 2 hour drive of Grand Rapids (wound up finding one in Battle Creek) in the mid 90s without the interweb. bolts sieze from the salty treatment of Michigan roads within about 6 months.
Second off - It's a free service that shouldn't even be free. Your inconvenience should not be an issue. It's a job that would run you $800+ anywhere else in the world.
