I REALLY want to go and check it out now.

The only thing i'd be really worried about is not finding it.

Wiki shows this as an entrance...

You're very very lucky your KJ didn't fall into a subsidence and you didn't get injured.

There is a reason why Route 61 is closed, plowed shut and a bypass.

I live about 1/2 hour away from Centralia and there's always some ******* who gets their Jeep/Truck/ATV stuck because the ground fellout around them.

I'll admit, the "town" is an oddity and it is creepy driving through there. I do, however, feel terrible for the families who got kicked out of their houses. The Odd Fellows cemetary recently got vandalized, too. Some kids kicked over tombstones and caused about 6k worth of damage.

If anyone goes there, I'd suggest NOT to drive on the closed section of 61. The danger is real and if you fall in, you're on your own. Oh, and please don't bother the residents...they don't like that.

That's the closed section of 61 facing Northbound while standing in the closed section. If you were on the other side of that, you'd be at the "entrance".

You'll have no trouble finding it. The Byrnesville (pro: Burnsville, ironic) Bypass will bank sharply to the left if your're heading southbound on 61. There is a large yellow directional arrow where you can park in front of.

We did come across a Cemetery with A LOT of tombstones pushed over.

Got to take a local's suggestions.

Would it be ok to hike down there on foot? Is that frowned upon?

Yeah, just park at that huge left arrow sign and you're there.

Hoofing it down is not a problem, although mine subsidence is still a major concern. You wouldn't want to fall in and get burned by scalding hot steam or asphalt, right?

Most of the surrounding trails are decent around that cemetary (hell, I've been on them), as it's theorized that the fire has moved out of the immediate area (Centralia Borough) and it's now around the periphery of borough (Route 61).

I edited and entered most of the data on the Wiki Centralia page so it is accurate for the most part.

I'd highy recommend David DeKok's Unseen Danger; A Tragedy of People, Government, and the Centralia Mine Fire for more on it.

I fixed it. It is Saturday 5/22.......thanks for picking up my error. Right now that is the agreed on date.

Being a Godfather is more important though.

yes, as Dave said, we will be making a trip down to Centralia, PA on May 22 and I am leaving my house in Rensselaer, NY about 0630 and stopping at the first plaza heading south on RT 87. I am planning on getting there about 0700 and stopping for 30 min before continuing the trip down. if you are in the Albany area and want to meet up with us to convoy down, be at that plaza other wise, I will stop again just off exit 119 on RT 81 south. I am hoping that if all goes well we should be there about 1100-1200 on the 22nd.
