The town was pretty cool with all the steam coming out of the ground. For everyone that doesn't know about Centralia, PA, it use to be a mining town until the dump caught fire and then caught the coal in the mines on fire, and it's been burning ever since. I've also heard that it will burn for something around another 150 years! And here's some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

This is the steam that's coming from the fire underground.

Then we came across some windmills.

The first one we came across was marked D-28 and counted down from there until it went to D-4. We wanted to see the B's and A's, but we couldn't find them.

Those are some awesome pics. I've always wanted to go to Centralia. A Jeep is the perfect vehicle to do it in.

I remember watching something on the History Channel about that place. I am surprised you were able to ramble around freely about the place. Sweet photos by the way, looks like a cool place to explore.

Great pics. Great place.

One of my jeep buddies and myself are discussing a run to Centralia, Pa. in the spring/early summer. It is a ways from here so we have to time the run right. We are going to leave early in the morning and explore all day. We havn't made definate plans yet but it is #1 on our list of places to go this year.

Definately a place to go.

Dave, I could be there in 4 1/2 hours. Just saying.

I like "Ghost Towns". There is one up here in NY too that I have been to. Not many know about these places and I won't publicize the NY one on the Net. The Centralia one is more well known.

When we get details maybe I will post it in the Northeast section or PM you. You would certainly be welcome to join us. We are just in the "talking about it" stage now but it is definately one we are going to do.

Centralia is just under 2 hours from me. We kinda found the road to the Windmills on accident. The town is really small, but there are a lot of side dirt roads to explore.

I like this kind of stuff as well. I'm planning a trip to south central PA to the abandoned turnpike in Breezewood, PA. I really like going to places in NJ that are in the Weird NJ book.

ms5490 - Right. Silent Hill is sorta loosely based on Centralia.

We have a"ghost town" here in CT too but there is nothing there. It's really old. It was abandon in 1899. Some people say it is totally silent when you go there. No birds or any nature sounds at all. It's strange. It's even been removed from some maps.

The history has something to do with descendants of an English guy that was beheaded for planning to overthrow King Henry VIII. A curse was placed on him and his lineage and a few of them ended up in CT. Unfortunately, there are some pretty steep fines if you're caught on the land.

I REALLY want to go and check it out now.

The only thing i'd be really worried about is not finding it.

Wiki shows this as an entrance...
