We have a Honda CRV and a Liberty. We have been on some pretty difficult trails with the Honda in Colorado and Utah. No rock crawling, mind you, but it has been pretty impressive up 'til now. We did have to give up on White Rim trail in Moab because of ground clearance over boulders in the road and we did pretty severe damage to the vapor recovery canister and driver side CV on a rock in some deep mud near Rifle Falls, CO. SOooo... we bought ourselves a lifted Jeep Liberty. It doesn't have the fuel economy of the CRV, but it is way more capable of wheeling. We are heading to the Canadian Rockies and Alaska this summer. Want to guess which truck we are taking?

Oh yea, for some reason, we were lucky when we bought the 03 CRV. It has a timing chain, not a belt. I had a belt go out on a Honda Prelude at 70mph. It bent three valves and cost about $2,000 to have repaired. Timing belts suck!

Haha, I read that article when it was on the homepage...and then promptly told all my Jeep Liberty-owning friends and scared them all...while I sat there and convinced myself that the KJs are well worth the added cost ;)

too funny, my mom just emailed me this article yesterday. i about laughed when i read the part about the Patriot being "as capable" off-road as a Liberty.

but yeah, when i read the part about the CR-V being a "better buy" for one of the models, i immediately discredited the entire write-up.

it seems to me these Honda owners fall all over themselves when it comes to resale value, but what good is that gonna do you when you pay like $10K MORE in the first place? i bought my '04 Liberty used with 58K miles for $11K. I suspect over its lifetime, I will spend between $600-1400 in tires (depending on how long I keep it), I definitely see $500 for a lift coming up, and I expect to spend about another $600-800 on maintenance (oil changes, fluids, etc.)

Even using the high values, that's still less than $15K TCO, of which I will probably get $2K back when I either trade it in or sell it.

BTW, I'm not counting gas mileage, because if I don't have a small SUV, I would be driving a truck instead, which gets even worse MPG than this does.

Same for me ... When i buy a car or truck, im the last owner :p I keep'em till i drop'em. Im 32 years old now and i had my 1st car at 16 years old. The liberty is my 3rd car and so far, all my cars got beaten to hell including derby demolitions with the Ford Tempo 92. We lose so much money buying cars, i give my cars a last heroic moments before they die !!

That's my point....this article was written factoring in the residual value, which is moot as far as I'm concerned...because either 1) Don't usually buy new, or 2) Keep what I did buy new well past the point of return anyways.

Plus, I don't know about with a Jeep, but on our Chrysler T&C, we didn't even come close to paying sticker (like, $5K UNDER).

Try getting a Honda for that much off!

I dislike that the quotes make it appear I think a Patriot is a capable as a Libby,although there are people who will tell you a Libby is just for malls and such.

Jnaut's vehicles are the same way. I drive them until they can't be driven. Which means Jnaut's liberty better last another *tap*tap*tap* 13-15 years to keep up with my previous vehicles.

Don't know the terms You use but in Europe...

RX = Enduro
MX = Motocross

Not identical but You can ride both on the same trail.....

The ( wrong ) idea the KJ was just another SUV was 'suggested' mainly for marketing reasons, I guess, hence the mismatched comparisons
made by some self defined experts...

But we don't care, we know what we've got :p

I agree, Chrysler did make a mistake there. They designed the KJ being a Jeep but also made it some kinda wall crawler designed. That is one mistake, as they should've tought about gas consumption since women (most all of them) do not look for offroad capabilities but gas mileage instead... So they should have built it gas efficient and smoother ride and then youd be having sales go right up passed any other small SUVs. That is only my thinking, i might be totally wrong or not. So, what im saying is, by keeping the KJ a Jeep (low rpm strength and torque) they also sent away some of potential buyers away from it ... Hence the why they have then built the patriot and compass ... They realised the mistake...

My conversation with my wife when I bought my KJ:

Wife: "Oh, a Liberty? It's cute, why do you want one?"

Me: "Three reasons: we need more space than a Wrangler can give us, it costs less than a Grand Cherokee, and lastly it's a Jeep"

Wife: "What about a Ford Escape?"

Me: "It's a Jeep, there isn't anything on the road that can touch it in its size."

When it comes to a vehicle, I look at its intended purpose and I could care less about its TCO's. I'm buying it to fill a need not to be easy on my back pocket.

And by what measure are they using to come up with a Patriot is as off road capable as a Liberty? If you ask Jeep they will tell you it isn't as off road capable...

Man there are so many wierd things going on in this thread that I don't really know how to reply to them all. I will say that Chrysler is fantastic at designing individual components and horrible at vehicle execution. Both the KJ, MK [Compass / Patriot] and the PM [Caliber] all have their one individual set of issues and any one of these vehicles costs money to own.
