I know the sensor tends to go bad, & people choose not to replace them & report no issues. I sold mine, so I can't even try it for you.

Is that really a big deal? I never retuned any of my carbed 4x4's each time I ****** into and out of 4lo, but somehow they didn't implode.

No, That's exactly what ThunderbirdJunkie is saying. That seems to be the one pitfall of converting a 4x2 to a 4x4, aside from the horrendous cost when the Jeep should've never been built as a two wheeler anyway.

You will loose some torque in 4lo without the sensor and programming from what i read on other forums, but if you could live with that and have it done at a later date then no big deal. If you have the wiring there, seems like most of these KJ's got a universal harness for the drivetrain so the plug might be there, its a quick programming change at the dealer, most would do it for a flat rate charge around me, like $75 for one hour labor even though it takes like ten minutes to hook up and program.

Ok so its an 05 with over 100k, but is it paid off? Thats the biggest factor here... I see fairly low mileage 02-04's, under 100k, for around the $6-7k mark, some go higher like a limited, etc...

You could always sell the current KJ as a private sale if you had something else to drive inbetween the sale and purchase of the replacement. Between the NADA and KBB i would average your 05 to be worth $5-6k depending on overall condition. And you have done some upgrades, lift and such. I don't see any problem getting $6k out of it, just have to find the right buyer, 2wd SUV's are a harder sale here in the Midwest thanks to our winters. Back when i was younger and bought my first vehicle i found out quickly that used dealers around here will put an automatic price tag of $1500 on a beater if it has working 4wd and then the price goes up from there based on condition.

You might be surprised how many old beaters you see driving around here in the winter, then they sit all summer as they drive their gas miser cars.

But anyway back to your situation... If its paid off and you can get say $6k out of it and buy a 4wd with less mileage also, i mean if your going to go 4wd why not reduce your mileage also right, for say $7-8k your ahead of the game. $6k plus your $2500 budget for adding 4wd gives you a $8500 budget to buy a lower mileage 4wd.

I realize sentimental value and all, one gets attached to their vehicle, but this is a decision that needs to be made by ignoring those feelings. Why put $2500 or more into a 05 with 138k on the clock when you can find 4wd's like mine with half or a quarter of the mileage within your budget? I paid $6k for mine with 45k on the clock, it was a salvage title which in itself was stupid the way it happened but its the rules on titling and selling a repaired vehicle, and i just saw an 04 the other day with 62k on the clock, a 4wd sport that had a pretty good list of options, going for $7500 or best offer.

A quick word on the title issue i mentioned in case you come across a salvage title. In my case the previous owner pegged an idiot who pulled out in front of him, no airbag deployment, just front end damage. The radiator support, fenders, hood, grill, bumper, etc, you get the point. Anyway the previous owner decided to take the insurance check and sell the KJ to a local shop that does rebuilds. Why? Because in the end he made money, it was paid off, so he took the check for the damage and then what he was able to sell it for, and used that as a down payment to pay for nearly half of a new vehicle, no idea what but thats what the shop i bought the KJ from told me and he is reliable so i believe it. But now the vehicle was sold in disrepair to him and so he had to document it as a salvaged vehicle to legally resell it after repairing it and getting a state safety inspection.

If you ever think about buying a salvaged vehicle make sure the inspections were done and no worries. I have paperwork from the state with the state seal stamped on it as well as signatures backing up that it passed inspection to be titled and sold. So am i worried, not at all, i got a great deal on a low mileage vehicle that was basically like new from the doors forward. And all for $6k.

Yeah its not like the old days when you saw a vehicle was salvaged... I mean sure you got to make sure it wasnt like a flood vehicle cause they will nickle and dime the heck out of you cause stuff got wet... But otherwise as long as the repair was done by a good shop no problem.

I bought my KJ from a shop that specializes in fixing the worst of the worst.. And the repairs on my KJ were basically bolt on stuff except for the radiator support. He has one of those frame tables and i have seen him working on stuff where he has fixtures welded to the vehicle sized table on the floor and then welded to the frame or body points on the vehicle so he can pull stuff back and replace stuff without anything moving, its really quite impressive what he can bring back from trashed.
