It has one electronic sender, but all it really does is turn on the "PART TIME" light on your dash. everything is mechanical.

is that the position sensor?
do you know where that one goes into??? I mean from the t-case to where???

I really appreciate it man.....so the only diference between 4hi and 4low is the gearing??? No other electronical things are involved?

Yes it's the position sensor. I don't know specifically where it leads, but all it accomplishes is turning on that light. Your computer system doesn't know or care. so yes it's all gearing & nothing electronic.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I have the crazy idea of putting everything on mine and make it 4wd, and as I see now.....I MIGHT not need the computer reprogramed...but I know

hmm didnt know that..well i wont try to make mine a 4wd

I didn't see you had a 2WD. My knowledge is from a t-case swap, rather than an afterthought installation. I was assuming that you were after the same. Having been through the KJ's front suspension more times than I ever wanted I can tell you that you are nuts. Not just from a money stand point, but from an effort stand point.

That said, my experience with MOPAR products is that they install the same wiring in every vehicle, regardless of the actual installed options. For instance, My KJ did not have heated mirrors, but everything I needed to install them & make them work like they were always there, was there. I bought a new '96 Dodge Neon with no sound system, so I could install my own aftermarket setup, but all the wiring for the head unit & speakers were still installed. This makes sense from a production standpoint. So I would not be surprised if your 2WD KJ has the wiring installed for the position sensor. I also wouldn't be surprised if your ECU already was programmed to receive the signal. Might not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

That said here's my advice: 1) do what everyone else has said & sell the 2WD & buy a 4WD, or 2) If you just HAVE to keep this one, don't even mess with trying to install the weak KJ IFS system. Put your time & money in to a SFA set up. Either way, you are going to be spending tons of money, so you may as well spend it right!

The KJ's are locked all the time. Only thing that would really make it 4x4 would be spools out front and in back. But, it would be hell to drive on anything that wasn't slippery.

You are right, it's a "crazy idea" :p
just kidding pal...

Really for the cost of converting a 2WD vehicle to 4WD you'd be better off simply selling the 2WD and buying 4WD.

I've never done it before but common sense says that;

#1 swap out the entire front axle assembly
#2 install a NP231/232 transfer case c/w driveshaft (I'm not positive what's involved for that to happen, you'd likely need a conversion kit or maybe a new transmission. You'd have to do the research.)
#3 replace the transmission shifter console for a 4WD model

yea basically they are the "same" just bolt on the front diff. assembly, get a ******/transfer and o well for the rest.

hey tjkj where does that plug goes....from the t-case to where??

thankx man

That sensor on the tcase is just a resistor that changes resistance with the change in shifter position. It's the same part for both the 231 and the 242. I'm guessing reprogramming is needed if 242 "full time" is used on an upgraded 231 Jeep (which I still want to do).

I did that, & no programming was needed. 4 lo is the same in both t-cases.
