I drove home, turned off the engine and heard a clanking sound like a key dropped through the engine to the ground.

A few hours later, I started it up, with no problems and could drive. I drove it for about 20 miles then got the ETC light, and kept driving and gradually all the other lights started coming on (abs, brake, enigne).

I turned the car off, and car the wouldn't turn back on. I came back 3 hours later and it started no problem. I drove for 15 minutes and turned off the car again. Then it would not start again after trying several different times.

I then found what sounded like a key clanking down the engine. It looks like a broken ring of some sort. Does anybody have an idea ?

I will try to get another picture. When I try to start it, it does not turnover at all.

I've tried to jump start it and it does work, but but stalls after 30 seconds or so now.

I would inspect around the alternator, especially with the symptoms you are describing, sounds like alternator is trashed and you are trying to run the Libby on a almost dead battery. Even though it looks like an end to a coil spring or something.
Where at under the vehicle was that piece lying, under pass front, drivers floor pan, etc?

Ok. I found the rest of the broken part. Now it looks like more of a spring. It was stuck at the bottom of the engine and hadn't hit the ground yet. It was directly in the middle between the passenger and driver side. It could have moved around though after driving a bit. Thanks for everybody's help :)

I originally thought that first piece looked like part of a spring.... now to figure out where it came from. Its look like a pretty stiff one too.

Got a suggestion. Put a ruler or tape measure next to the item when you take a pic. Knowing the relative dimension of the "spring" may help some of the folks here identify it.

Have another look at your alternator. My guess...the decoupler pulley threw it's guts out.

(then that's not a spring, that's the decoupler clutch)

And that would explain the flat battery too.
That was my thinking, just didn't know what to call the alternator parts.

Just to let everybody know, it is the alternator. It was the clutch, that controls it. Does anybody know of a good place to buy them online somewhere in the United States?

I've tried schucks, auto zone and none of them have it.

Thanks for the link Tony. I am going to order just the decoupler and try to install just that instead of the alternator as well. I have the hex version and I am wondering if I can just take off the decoupler without taking off the belt and alternator? As it looks a bit challenging to take the belt off.

Fixed

Thanks for everybody's help. I got the new decoupler pulley from IAE and had it put on the alternator and now the Jeep works again :) I tried doing it myself, but I couldn't loosen the belt tensionor, but either way its done.
